Suranne Jones/Neil Gaiman episode (spoilers?)

Whofan

Fleet Captain
Reportedly, she'll be playing a character named "Idris" which interestingly means "Impulsive Lord" or something like that. Apparentally she'll also be a "Old friend with a new face".

Plus there's that Brillant book season 6 qoute about a "fellow Gallifreyan". Gaiman also mentioned something about the War Games, and Idris, rearranged a bit, is Sidr(Sidrat?).

So it makes me think-Perhaps we're getting another time lord/lady this season, possibly fob-watched. Could it be Romana, the Rani or even Jenny?

When you think of it, how many Time Lords might have taken the opportunity to escape the TimeLock when Gallifrey was appearing above earth.

In revenge for the Thor controversy, she'll be playing Idris Elba.

I've often thought that several TARDIS Transports fled Gallifrey during it's brief return to normal spacetime.

River said she learned to fly the TARDIS from the very best (and seemed to indicate that the Doctor was not the one she was referring to) so then who else could do such a thing.

^ She was probably joking, unless 10a turns up.

She was joking, and she said explicitly in "The Pandorica Opens" that The Doctor taught her how to fly the TARDIS. She was just teasing him/winding him up in "Time of Angels."

Or, perhaps a different incarnation of the Doctor is who teaches her? That way there, the Doctor still taught her, and her "where were you?" comment still has a ring of truth ot it.

Wasn't the quote 'an old acquaintance'? Which could be very different to an old friend...

I would love to see a Romana character, the little I've had a chance to listen to of the Gallifrey Adventures has intrigued me to want more Romana. (I have Gallifrey Adventures Series 1-4, but I also have 8 Stephen R. Donaldson Audio Books to get through first)

I enjoyed Iris Wildtyme (as narrated by Nicholas Courtney, I believe) in the Tales from the Tardis CD, and I understand she's been fun in several Audios, so, I'd look forward to her, too.

Edit: Hmmm. after Googling her, she looks more appropriate for Leela than anyone I mentioned :(

I don't Suranne plays Romana or The Rani or any other Time Lord, because of the timing of the episode. It's not Episode 7. And Episode 7 is supposed to include a "game-changing" event that's so profound the series has to take a several-month break to let viewers recover.

The return of any Time Lord, particularly a friendly one in the case of Romana or Susan, would be a massive game-changer because the Doctor would now be faced with the responsibility of restoring his race. That's a prime reason why I can't see Romana for certain appearing because the Doctor would be duty bound to end his travels and play Adam and Eve, or at least build a good loom (those who've read Lungbarrow will get the joke).

I suppose it could be Romana and the Doctor not know, I suppose. Georgia Moffett is too popular to recast the role of Jenny (and imagine the publicity the show would generate in casting Mrs. David Tennant anyway).

Didn't the Doctor once have a "living TARDIS" as a companion during the Big Finish adventures. Compassion I think was the character's name? Maybe they're lining up to do another crossover story?

Ultimately, I think it's going to be a brand-new character, perhaps one with some history with the Doctor (former companion we've never heard of before, etc - although that would be following the same path as River Song). Remember, this isn't some staff writer or Steven Moffat we're talking about. This is Neil Gaiman - biggest-name writer to ever contribute a TV episode to the show in its 50-year history. Frankly I will be disappointed if he ends up rehashing any old characters.

What if the Master returns...?

Yes, my theory is that Idris (Suranne Jones's character) will be the Master. Early on, the character was described as being an "old friend with a new face." I would never call the Rani an "old friend," but I could see the Master being described as such, even if they're rather on the outs right now. It's either the Master or Romana, but I think it being Romana would be too much of a "game-changer."

So, yeah, I think the Master will be returning... regenerated as a woman. (of course he'll return, even if my theory isn't right, he'll be back someday; he's as necessary to the show as the Daleks, IMHO)

Whoever Idris "really" is, I doubt she's a Time Lord for reasons 23skidoo already went over. After all, regeneration isn't the only way to change a face, especially in the world of science fiction. I wouldn't be surprised if Idris isn't someone we know (and I'm beginning to lean towards hoping she isn't as 23skidoo is).

*cough Richard Curtis cough*
Careful, you don't want to restart that old argument. ;)

I don't know that I buy that. I mean, Neil Gaiman is the guy who brought back freaking Element Girl.
