I bought this 2005 Discovery Channel "movie" on DVD and started watching it when much to my surprise I see that "Dr. Tom" from "Being Erica" stars in it!

Anyway, this for me has always been an interesting movie as the Yellowstone Caldera has always interested and fascinated me as one of those things I'd like to see happen someday that could severly disrupt life as we know it.

Any others seen/remember this movie? What did you think of it? What are your feelings on the Yellowstone Caldera/"Supervolcano."

I've never seen it, but I figure if Yellowstone ever goes, we're boned and I won't have to think too much about it.

It's kind of fucked up that various governments have probably already forseen this contingency and has built all sorts of places underground with decades worth of foodstuffs and fresh water so when this happens they'll go underground and ride it out safely and leave us to die.

They call that "continuity of government" or a "shadow government."

Someone has to be alive to rule the world of ash, after all... :p

With regards to having secure bunkers for a privileged few, the argument used in England during the cold war was something like this...

1. The role of the government is to protect the people.
2. The government can't protect the people if the government is destroyed.
3. Self preservation of the government is therefore a greater priority [than protecting the people].

My dad was one of the bunker people, you know. He only told us about it after they had been closed (and opened again as tourist attractions).

 Sometimes, despite myself, I find I'm quite fond of governments.

I'm on that short list to be in one of those bunkers. I'll send you a post card.

Isn't this the kind of straw-man argument that gets machines to take-over mankind in corny sci-fi movies?

Supervolcano is a facinating subject. If I am correct, there are three of them in America...the biggest being part of the Colorado Rockies, Yellowstone, and the third out here in califorina, which Mammoth Mountain is part of...

Robert Maxwell,

Heh, I don't think that's called ensuring survival to "rule the world of ash", I think that's called selfishly saving your ass, and letting everybody else die.

Jadzia,

There's something about 3.) that just doesn't sit well with me. I don't know why :p

It had Gary Lewis from "Billy Elliott" in it as well. :bolian:

Um you want to see an Extinction Level Event?

It's that "accident on the highway" side of me, we all have it.

It would just be utterly awesome to see the Yellowstone Caldera erupt. Yes, it'd be the end of life as we know it pretty much, but what a way to go! In a blaze of awesome!

I bought it right after I found out it was available on DVD. One of my favorite disaster movies.

Yeah, it is kind of fun to imagine fighting for survival in the worst possible conditions. I've done it myself. I even enjoy a good disaster flick.

But awesome ain't the word I'll use if it actually happens.

If you think it would be fun, you should live as a homeless person for a year. Super volcano apocalypse would be less fun than that.

Yeah, seriously. I had to live without electricity for a couple weeks once. That in itself was tremendously unpleasant. I don't think it would be "awesome" to see the world basically come to an end.

Let me clarify my statements.

If I had to pick a way for the world to end: Asteroid strike, a super alien virus, an alien attack, etc.

I would pick the Caldera erupting. ;)

Alien invasion > Caldera.

Because I think I would die happy knowing there was a superior race out there, continuing the pursuit of perfection in our absence. :)
