Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spoiler

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

So I've only watched a few scattered episodes here and there -- maybe a handful total -- so I'm not necessarily familiar with the major arcs, but it seems to be like this show is the anti-CW, the anti-Smallville. I'm surprised it's still on that network. If Melrose Place is a hit, I fully expect them to start bringing back Dallas, Falcon Crest, Knots Landing and who knows what else.

Do you recommend this show to me and why?

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Yes, and because like you said, it's the anti-CW. I was surprised by how good it is, honestly.

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Does it get bogged down with the same thing that plagued Buffy and Angel -- the prophecies or ancient scrolls or books that's always there to them exactly what's going on and what to do about it?

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Oh, Dawn Ostroff wanted to cancel Supernatural at the end of season 2, aragorn. That's common knowledge. Eric Kripke, the exec producer, was quoted about this in one of his TV Guide interviews. It was the suits at Warners Studios, which produces the show, who stepped in and put their foot down. SPN makes quite a bit of cash for them overseas. They've sold it to over 50 markets now. It doesn't make CW much money because it doesn't hit the 18-34 female target demo well enough, but it makes money for Warners big time. Dawn Ostroff has been quoted as saying that "she doesn't get it" [the show]. To her, only soapy trash like Melrose Place, Gossip Girl et al will lure in young women. She doesn't seem to want the young male viewers, and SPN commits the sin of having a lot of over 35 viewers.

Do you recommend this show to me and why?

Oh yes. Be forewarned--the first half of its first season is fairly weak and stand alone episodic,(the pilot is good, though) but once you get to the end of season one and into season two, the improvement is striking. Watch out for an episode called "Route 666." It's laughably bad. Even the writers acknowledged later in a bit of meta that it sucked.

Most shows don't get markedly better as they age. Supernatural has, that's why it's worth sticking with. If you enjoy consistent, extremely strong characterization, you'll like Supernatural. If you like seeing events actually affect characters and change their behavior, you should watch Supernatural. It's very unlike Smallville that way. If you like humor, Supernatural (especially after Ben Edlund joined the writing staff in season two) has some of the weirdest humor around. In fact, it's fairly psychotic in its humor from late in season two and especially into season four. Five words: bipolar suicidal live teddy bear :guffaw:
SPN will whiplash from "open a vein" drama to psycho humor Ben Edlund style. IMO, so much funnier and grown up than Buffy ever was. Ever. No, there's not always some ancient scroll telling them what to do. The brothers fuck up. A lot. As anyone who watched this last season will tell you.

There's great acting by the two leads, who are totally believable as brothers. They act like guys really act (within the bounds of network tv censorship of course) instead of how chicks think guys should act. However, Padalecki--who plays the younger brother--was fairly stiff in his role during season one. I don't know if he got an acting coach between seasons one and two, but anyone will tell you that he improved tenfold in his work. Also, there is a story arc that ties together nicely between seasons one and four. Little hints are dropped along the way that don't even seem like hints at the time. The writers did a great job with that.

A little bit of SPN's psychotic brand of humor, aragorn. Something not too spoilery for the overall story arc. It's a clip from season two's "Tall Tales." Curtis the frat boy tell the story of the night he was abducted from campus.

Slow dance

One thing I appreciate about the show is that (in my opinion) it's gotten better every season. S1 was fairly generic episodic fare, particularly in the first half (it starts to pick up with Episode 11, "Scarecrow"), but towards the end of S1 and into S2 they really started delving into the arc and the show's mythology.

Ah, yes, "Route 666." The sad thing about that is, though it's arguably the show's worst episode, it's also the most viewed episode with 5.82 million viewers.

That's because it aired the night of the SOTU address. The episode after--Faith--one of season one's best. But no, the embarrassingly awful Route 666 just had to air on the night everyone could sample it. Oy vey. :o  Of all the luck.

Aragorn, we aren't kidding about Route 666. Brace yourself. I think someone on the writing staff must have been smoking weed when they wrote that one.

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Brace myself? I haven't decided if I'm going to watch it yet. :p

Though Ruby #2 is hot.

If I watch it, I may just wait for after it ends to get the complete series on Blu-ray.

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Shoot, if you like ruby #2 you'll love all of it. ;) So, if you've dabbled in season four, what eps have you seen?

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

I don't know what I've dabbled in. I never watched it during the season, so who knows what episodes I saw over the summer since they can show any episode from any season. I saw the episode where Dean returned from hell. I saw the episode where they became out-of-body ghosts to find who kidnapped a reaper (the chick reaper was hot) and then the follow-up episode where Dean tortures the guy and an angel turns out to be bad. I think there was an episode with a serial killer Santa? There was also an episode where the old guy who knows as much as they do had a ghost panic room or something like that. But maybe that was the episode where Dean returned from hell. There was also an episode where the hunters were being hunted down, and Dean was confronted by someone played by Nicki Aycox.

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

What a horrible, horrible way to treat these characters. The writers have totally dropped the ball. :scream:

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Oh my God, you've seen some of the best eps. The old guy is Bobby. The panic room episode came after Dean came back from hell. The reaper chick is hot. I could switch teams for her if I were so inclined. And you've seen Alistair and the killer Santa who says Fudge when he curses. And Castiel.

Heaven....I'm in heaven....and my heart beats so that I can hardly speeeeeak....

Gotta love Alistair. He was so f'ing creepy.

A horrible way to treat these characters? What? Actually sending Dean to hell and letting the audience know he really suffered? That he succumbed and began torturing others? I found it refreshing.

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

So is it all downhill from here and I should just avoid the show? :p

Never seen any episodes with Jeffrey Dean Morgan or Katie Cassidy. Like I said, just a handful.

Sorry, thought I was in a BSG thread.

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Sorry, thought I was in a BSG thread.

HA! On BSG, I quite agree. First two seasons great. Last 2 seasons, crap.

No, it's not all downhill from here. :p

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

All pranksters and tricksters welcome here, you silly. SPN threads are fun threads.

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

This is off-topic, but I really need some Supernatural help. I've moved from the Chicago area to northeastern Wisconsin, not far from Green Bay and am
having no luck pulling in the local CW station. I have never paid for television and I'm not about to start now. CW online doesn't have full episodes now that it's rerun season and I'm in serious Dean-withdrawal mode. Hulu and Fancast don't carry it. Am I screwed until season 4 dvd's come out?

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

The DVDs will be released September 1. You can preorder from Amazon. Good luck with those withdrawal pains. Maybe someone else knows a site?

Re: Supernatural five minute preview clip from comic con--slightly spo

I find it troubling that if not for random happenstance, I never would have started watching Supernatural at all.

The network did not promote it well in its first few seasons (maybe it still doesn't) and I had the mistaken impression it was focused on Horror/Gore elements, rather than the well done mix of Modern Myth, Urban Fantasy, & Hilarity it actually turned out to be.

Supernatural sits right up there with other character-based arc shows like Babylon 5, Farscape, Deep Space 9, etc.

If you're a fan of The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher or the Quincey Morris & Elizabeth Chastain Investigations by Justin Gustainis then sit back and enjoy.
