Supernatural 6x3 "The Third Man" spoilers/discussion thread

But we have yet to see Sam experience strong emotions. From hate to love, ect

Sam acts as if he can't feel anything--literally. He's numb, like his emotions are completely turned off. It's Sam all right. He's not possessed and he's not altered. He's detached and empty. That's what's got me hooked. Even the prostitute fits in with the characterization. You pay prostitutes to leave when it's over. It's fascinating and it has me hooked. The monsters of the week are secondary.

It figures that this was a Ben Edlund episode. I always seem to love his stuff. Didn't he create the cold, alternate Sam of "Mystery Spot"?
It's Mystery Spot (and a few other comments about how Sam really is much more like his father then Dean is) that really makes me think this is just Sam's way of dealing with all the events that have happened.

And why I don't think anything sinister is happening with Sam.

But the previews for the up coming episode seem to really throw cold water on that idea. Unless its just in the course of a case (or in the solo hunting Sam did) dean finds out some activity that Sam did that Dean just can't get his mind around.

And clearly Dean knows Sam is willing (since season 3 at the very least) to do things that Dean absolutely wouldn't (or wouldn't at the time).

THough I assume Dean doesn't know what Sam was like in Mystery Spot or what he was willing to do. I also assume that Dean might not know that Sam killed that demon, when the host was active (though really Dean would have just killed her with the knife, no real question about that).

But he does know several things, that Sam is willing to do things that Dean just doesn't natural consider right.

Alternate Sam from Mystery Spot was perfectly willing to sacrifice a stranger to get the fresh blood needed to get Dean back on the (lying) advice of Trickster/Gabriel's words. That was Sam in an alternate timeline. Sam's capable of being a very cold blooded individual. It's not okay to murder someone simply because it's a stranger.

Hee. Castiel falling on Sam's car. Tell Rafael to bite me. :guffaw:

Good episode. The civil war in heaven sounds like it's going to be interesting. Always nice to have Cas in an episode.

Shirtless Sam. All the women and gay men should be really happy with that! :rommie:

Yes we are, but I was happy to see shirtless Jensen too. I am an equal opportunity man whore for that type of thing.

My only confusion is whether or not Sam and/or Dean still have the special "cannot be found by angels" tattoos on their ribs. Cas seemed to be able to find them just from Dean's praying (without Dean giving Cas a particular location).

I don't know. Maybe they don't need the enochian sigils anymore since Lucifer went to the pit and the angels aren't gunning for them anymore.

All through season 5 Castiel was able to find Dean (even when Dean was trying to give himself to Michael). So I assume since Castiel put the sigils on them he is the only angel who can track them.

I thought Cas needed Sam and Dean to tell them where they were (usually via cellphone call)...Otherwise, he would communicate with them via dreams.

I suppose it's possible that Dean still has the symbols but not reborn Sam.

What does everyone think about Cas using the brothers to help settle his debt?

I get a Michael/Lucifer vibe out of the Castiel/Balthazar dynamic. Castiel is willing to let Balthazar gain power out of a sense of almost brotherly loyalty, and it's not going to turn out well.

As for using the brothers: it's clear that Castiel has gotten a bit of an ego in the past year. I'm sure Dean will beat it out of him, though it may take the whole season.

Add in the fact that he was in Satan's personal playground of hell and it likely makes Dean's time in hell look like a picnic.

He didn't really "use" them, in the sense that it was a premeditated plan. He simply had the opportunity and took advantage of it, just like Sam and Dean would if their positions were reversed. He learned well from them.

I still think he got out via Crowley or something similar. Even the characters on the show doubt God had anything to do it. They're just going with it cause they don't have any other guesses.

faith.... they lack faith... they taught cas freewill last season... maybe they can work on faith this one... cas is just one step away from "that could have been god, so! I am going to believe it was."

After rewatching several season five episodes it is clear that Castiel can find the guys without being prayed to or without them contacting him in advance. In one case it is when a character is trying to get away from Castiel. And it also explains why Castiel was able to find Adam so quickly as he also put sigil's on him as well.

And I would assume those Sigil's remain after Sam's trip downstairs, after all his full body went to Hell, unlike Dean (whose corpse still had his tattoo). And Sam's Tattoo survived the trip I would imagine bone carvings would as well.
