I finally got around to watching this. Not bad. It certainly was better than about 90% of what we got last season so maybe there is hope for the show this year. I would love nothing more than to put Supernatural back on my list of "must see" shows.
It still pretty much followed the SN formula--superfluous supernatural plot that is just a means to an end i.e. the whole D'Jinn subplot, false jeopardy and action/battles in the final passages that is free of any tension which has pretty much become as formulaic as the requisite ship fight scenes that was part and parcel of VOY & ENT and a few decent if not exceptional character scenes.
I would like to say the brothers reunion was great but at this point its effect has been blunted by how many times the two have died, been separated in the finale and brought back together in the premiere. Plus the idea of a year passing I didn't buy because I didn't have but 4 months pass for me and I didn't see the year apart. For me they were at most a few minutes apart between the season finale and premiere.
This was better than all the other season premieres except for "Lazarus Rising". I'm intrigued by what Grandpa is up to and why things have been turned upside down in the supernatural realm. I also loved Bob Seger's "Beautiful Loser"--probably my favorite part of the whole episode since I've downloaded that single and played it over and over and over again. I also liked Dean much more here than I have in many episodes and his love interest came off better here than all her other previous appearances.
I'd give it a B.
