Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoilerish

The season premiere is tonight, good people. I can't believe I actually got the day off. It was completely random that my bosses didn't need me today. Hooray! :)

Apparently the Supernatural fandom broke the Twitterverse today. I don't twitter myself, but a great many of them were using a "Luciferisrising" tag or something of the like, and it caused a firestorm among some more evangelical posters who didn't understand it was about a television show. :guffaw: "Godishere" started appearing in tags and a lot of people were very upset. Hee.

Here's an associated content article about what happened on Twitter.
Lucifer is Rising

Hmmm... to watch or not to watch. Well I know where the characters ended last season, but there are about 75 episodes I haven't seen yet.

Too bad this show doesn't have writing that's even half as good as Smallville. :p

Yah its a burden that somehow they manage.

Excellent! Really looking forward to this. Supernatural is one of only a handful of currently running shows that I actually give a toss about.

Here's hoping Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer) makes as good an impression as Misha Collins (Castiel) did last season.

Of course before SN I get to watch Vampire Diaries.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

I'm afraid I'm out on the Vampire Diaries. Seems like teen angst sprinkled with vampires. What can I say? I'm not a CW fan.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

You'll all be pleased to know that the viewing schedule my friend and I are on meant we actually(BLOODY FINALLY)watched the season four finale on Wednesday night. Nice to know I can see the next ep only a couple days later.

The final ep was pretty good but was it just me or were there about eighteen too many pop culture references thrown into the writing? I liked the holodeck and death star run lines but there were SO MANY, at one point Joe turned to me and said, "Are they trying to copy Buffy with all the smart arse lines, or what?"

Yeah, yeah, I know SN has ALWAYS done this but it seemed like a character could not open their mouth without a PCR coming out.

The finale was pretty well done with the whole Sam killing Lillith and thus causing the Apocalypse thing. I was also glad Ruby finally died because she wasn't a patch on the Cassidy girl. I have to admit as well that the whole "Angels wanting the endgame" scenario was quite intriguing and I actually approved.

Not bad stuff.

I was kind of kidding, but I do tend to have the TVon the channel just to make sure I don't miss SN.

Tulin

I actually like in more on this show in some ways, as Buffy's characters still had real lives. Dean (the primary pop reference) is a character who's down time is watching the tube, listening to music and hitting bars. No real other life outside of hunting. So it makes sense that he would absorb alot.

I mean all the characters on Buffy had school, parents, dated, and there demonhunting doesn't leave a lot of free time.

Can't wait till the premiere tonight! I was a part of all that twitter uproar today, it was fun stuff.

I won't be here during the ep to participate in a running commentary, but I'll pop in afterwords. I'm counting down the minutes here!

I spent the last week re-watching most of S4 to make sure everything was especially fresh in my head and I was very good in staying away from just about all the spoilers for this show and season so I'm on the edge of my seat!

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Any reason why they are starting the season so early this year?

Each season (except season 3) they have shown Supernatural at least one week prior to the official start of the season (season 3 they showed it the 2nd week and it had the lowest rating of any opener), the idea is that since the CW (and the WB before that) aren't real networks and can't legitimately compete against ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC that getting an early start will increase your initial sampling, and you might pick up a few of those viewers for the long haul.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Oh and here is what I project for our ratings tomorrow.

Due to the severely disappointing numbers for Tuesday, and the decline also on Wednesday, and with teh male audience mostly likely watching the start of Sunday Night Football.

I think we will get 3.2 - 3.5 million viewers (which is a significant drop from last season.

a 1.3 in adults 18-49
and a 1.5 in adults 18-34.

But even with this decline I think we have a shot at getting the largest female 18-34 number that we have had since moving to Thursdays. I am saying a 1.9.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Damn! Luci's seduction of Nick into accepting him was sinster. :wtf: The blood oozing out of the crib of his dead child, the lilting voice of his wife.

People misunderstand me. But then she asked the question--why didn't God do something while a crazy man slipped into your house and murdered your wife and child? Why doesn't God do something? Haven't we all asked that at one time or another? Perfect seduction.

The last scene with Dean and Sam--awesome. You let me down in ways I can't describe, Sam. Dean was soft spoken, clear, and he let him have it. Sam isn't the baby anymore and Dean doesn't have the strength in him to make him feel better.

Dean being Michael's sword....nice. And yet he refused. Dean still takes responsibility for his own actions. He thinks for himself. That's the point. That's why God likes him. Dean has lost so much in life, but he refused while Nick succumbed to Lucifer's manipulation. Dean lost his family. Nick lost his family. Nick said "yes" while Dean said "no."

Castiel was cool. Zachariah was a total douche. God put them on the plane, obviously. Meg was HOT. Oddly enough, the only part of the episode that didn't really work for me was Bobby's possession. It seemed.....rushed? Having Bobby working to regain use of his legs creates a tense dynamic between him and the boys. For storyline purposes, I understand the reason. The demons wouldn't have been there had it not been for Sam, but something about it seemed off. Peronally, I think Bobby did mean what he said, if only a little bit.

A great start. A somber start. Mark Pellegrino is going to be outstanding. :techman:

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

It was a solid opening. I fell asleep briefly and missed the Bobby's possession-darn-but I did get to catch the ending and Lucifer's seduction of Nick. Man that was pretty good. I like how Lucifer was honest with Nick about not being able to bring back his family. If this is the last season, its going to go out with a bang, if the opener is any indication.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Not as good as "In My Time of Dying" but I think its pretty damn close to "Lazarus Rising".

Loved them dropping "Carry On My Wayward Son", the refresher was much better done, and the teaser was very nice.

I pretty much liked everything, with three exceptions.

1. Sam #1 Fan, sorry but felt her character was to over the top for this episode.

2. MEg. Sorry didn't get the feeling of this demon being Meg. Not that the performance was boring, it just didn't seem to match her snark and behaviors we have seen when she's really cut loose (Born Under a Bad Sign, Shadow, Salvation and Devil's Trap).

3. Bobby getting possessed. Come on, really. He was front and center at the opening of the gate to hell, he has personally watched hunters being possessed and used as weapons, and he absolutely knows ways to prevent it. This is the man who puts holy water in his drink, we are honestly supposed to believe he doesn't have a tattoo?

Things I loved
1. That teaser..
2. Dean's discomfort around Sam
3. Sam telling Bobby the truth and not letting Lilith take the blame.
4. Dean really trying to get Sam to not tell Bobby, I think Dean's understands this far better. He truly remembers how bad it was when Hunters thought he had connections as just one of the Psychic kids.
5. Dean's honesty to Sam at the end.

That was the one I dreaded the most, because I honestly thought they would play it more like Bobby's verbal assault on Sam. And if they did that then I would have been pissed, because in many ways all of that is in fact Dean's specific fault. Sam fought to keep his own soul and died not risking his soul to save himself. Dean was the one who sought out the aid of demons, he was the one to bring back Sam, and he was the one to break the first seal setting all of this in motion.

as for what he does blame his brother for, well thats less murky (though he also took another side over Sam's, a side that betrayed him and Sam as much as Ruby did, so really pot calling kettle, your black). But on that more personal level it works. And I do want Sam to suffer for that, but at some point we do need to see (whether from Sam or from self awareness or another) that between himself, the angels and Ruby Sam wasn't given a lot of real choice.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

I'm thinking the old tattoos maybe don't work in this new environment? The possession was the one thing that didn't really work for me as well. I'm glad that Cas carved the new symbol whatchamacallit into both brothers' ribs. The possibilities are endless with Bobby being hobbled now, as it were. They could have come up with a slightly better way to achieve a serious disabling injury to Bobby is all, IMO. The rest was aces for me. I really loved the actress who played Lucifer in the form of Nick's dead wife. I love the question of will Dean finally agree to act as Michael's vessel, or will he be able to defeat Lucifer on his own? There's a difference between what God wants and what Zach and the angels want. The angels want Dean to KILL Lucifer, while God (and probably Michael) want him to STOP Lucifer, i.e. put him back in his box down below. Big difference.

I thought Dean's hurt at the end rang very true. It's not that Sam ultimately fucked up and broke the final seal that's the problem. Dean can forgive him for being stupid. It was the lies all along (just like he said in "Sex and Violence")....Sam's devaluation of their relationship (or Dean believing that Sam devalued it) by lying, Sam's thinking Dean was weak, and ultimately the attempted strangulation that Dean can't get over and I can't blame him. After all Dean's been through, he doesn't have it in him to make Sam feel better anymore. Sam may have felt he had no choice but to "choose" Ruby, but Dean considered it a betrayal. Some day, Dean will get to a point where he'll understand why Sam acted as he did. He'll forgive, but it'll take time. Trust is slow to rebuild.

Anyone notice the name they moved to the main cast credits?
