News Superman & Lois Ordered to Series at The CW

That made me wonder. Has Superman ever gotten a human disease or sick before like the cold or food poison except maybe in those moments when he has been made vulnerable by Kryptonite? When I watched Smallville it seems the only time he got sick was because of the rocks. I've also always wondered if he even needs to eat food. I know he does eat but does he do it just because he likes it but in reality he can exist simply off the heat from the sun?

All that depends on what era and who is writing him at the time. But I don't think that he has ever been ill with an earth based, non-magical disease and spread it to others. I don't really know about magical, non-earth based diseases either but I can imagine there was some story somewhere at some time other than a Starro issue.

As for Martha Kent, the pilot reportedly involves Clark and family returning to Smallville to attend her funeral.

You know, that's actually kind of interesting from a story point of view. In many versions of Superman, when things got rough for Clark he could/would talk to his mother. I don't recall if Supergirl every mentioned Jonathan to still be alive, but it would be something for this version of Superman to no longer have either parents to fall back to in a time of crisis.

There have also been a number of versions where both Jonathan and Martha were dead. I prefer them alive, personally, because like you, I enjoy Clark’s interactions with them. But this is an older version of Clark than other screen adaptations, and Martha’s death probably makes sense in that context. (I think “Elseworlds” implied Jonathan had already passed.) It also provides a reason for Clark and family to return to Smallville, and likely to remain (maybe even in the farmhouse?), since that seems to be where this series is centered.

So are they going to just use all the sets from "Smallville" for the show, at least on the farm? I mean of course they would use different furniture but the barn and house seem to be the same thing.

Speaking of Daily Planet staff, do we have a Perry White or any one? I know Jimmy and Cat are no longer at the Planet in the CW (and I think Dirk Armstrong is in jail), but maybe Fran or Steve Lombard or Allie the copy girl or Franklin Stern or Whit or...

The descriptions seem to suggest that Clark & Lois lose their jobs at the Planet and move to Smallville, so there might not be much need for Planet staffers. If they do feature the Planet, I think Perry should be retired or promoted to publisher by now, given that the story is set maybe 15-odd years later than the typical time frame for the Superman narrative. Or maybe he's mayor of Metropolis, like he was in the radio series for a while in the late '40s.

I think Kryptonians would be immune from all disease as long as they are powered by the yellow sun. Impenetrable would apply to germs too. If germs could get to them, that would be an effective weapon.

I hope they don't turn the show into Smallville with a different Clark.

I very much doubt the Smallville sets still exist, but I think it would be awesome if they duplicated Smallville’s layout of the interior of the farmhouse for any new set, since as you note, the exterior is the same.

I would love to see them do some crossovers with other versions of Clark. It's more interesting than having a D list hero show up and suddenly be given long story arcs at the expense of title characters. See The Flash.

I know he wouldn't do it, but if say Tom Welling showed up for an adventure, and the sets were the same as Smallville on the interior of that barn, it's a budget saver and a familiar place for Welling's version. And no reason Routh's barn can't look like that either.

The Arrowverse shows in general tend toward bloat in their supporting casts. The chart above is all the regular cast this show should require, and nobody besides Clark (and possibly one or both of the boys) ever needs to suit up and/or gain powers.

I'd be fine with that, other than an occasional guest star and of course villains.

I'm hoping they have less of a story arc (or shorter ones). Full season arcs get old and need filler.

Superman might not be affected by the virus, but he still might be a carrier. The mask, therefore, is to protect others, not himself.

Also to set a good example for the kiddies.

He would've retired quite recently: Clark was reporting to him (no pun intended) on the phone when he first showed up in Supergirl.

I bet this show is going to have a ton of nods and Smallville easter egg moments in it. Who wants to be we see the old high school and the youngsters having a Wall of Weird.
