Superhero Politics

Having read all this, I do believe that superhumans would have to register themselves in the same way a gun owner in the U.S. must possess a license to carry firearms. I doubt metahumans would be treated as slaves in a democratic society, nor would they be obligated to serve the government just because they had special powers. It's for the greater good.

If it happend in this world, our world, I'm not so sure. Do you think Hitler would have just let someone "be" if he knew he could have used that person to further his goals. And not just Hitler. Look at the world we live in now. Could you trust every government to not try and use the metahumans they could get access to further their 'national interests'?

Here is the thing, it's impossible to define "superhuman" consistently.

You don't want cities to blow up and some superpowers allow a person to blow up cities. It sounds so reasonable. But what will happen most certainly is not.

What will happen is this. Some time in the future your child will make a B- on a test at school, barely above a C, and because of that will be arrested and improvised without trial for life. Because, you see, C is average. A B- is only possible with superhuman intellect and superhuman intellect can be used to build a nuclear bomb.

In the best possible scenario, those who are intelligent or athletic will merely be lobotomized and crippled instead of exterminates. Of course, as all the superhumans are removed mean human capability (and thus the line that seperates human from superhuman) will be reduced. Eventually, only those who are profoundly disabled, both physically and mentally, will be allowed to live.

Wow, that might be the most unique and interesting take on super powers I've read in a really long time. Let me expound on that for just a second-

A government and society that is so scared of the idea of meta-humans it actually starts disabling people to prevent their insurgence- it goes on so long that by the time of whatever story this might, most people are profoundly disabled mentally and physically and that's just considered the status quo.

I think that could be an excellent fanfic based on established characters or, in my opinion, its even strong enough to be the basis for something entirely new. Really cool stuff.

In violation of the second amendment.

It's for the greater good.

Hitler, 1938.

Not necessarily. Remember I did say "in a democratic society." Communist states or totalitarian regimes might employ--heck, even coerce--supersoldiers and metavillains for the sake of power, but democratic governments might go as far as doing the "draft" version of recruiting superheroes on their side to counter such threats to national security and freedom.

What's needed is balance. You don't want the government to be too oppressive and to stomp on people's rights and liberties. At the same time, you don't want superpowered beings running amok and doing whatever the hell they want.

Kurt Vonnegut, "Harrison Bergeron". Not superpowers, but a similar premise. Check it out.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
