Supergirl - Season Four

I wonder how Alex doesn’t realize that Supergirl looks and sounds exactly like her sister.

I think we just have to accept that on faith. I mean, they were really pushing it in the scene where Kara reveals her secret identity to Nia. She didn't even change into her Supergirl costume. She just took off her glasses and demonstrated that she could fly, and Nia is all "Ohmigod, you're Supergirl!" even as Kara is standing there in her civilian garb, just minus her glasses.

And then there's Lena Luthor, who is a super-genius, but can't see past Kara's brilliant disguise. :)

Yeah, the whole mind wipe is a bit wonky and raises a whole lot of questions on how in the hell it can work, so I choose to figure that J'onn somehow only erased the information that Kara is Supergirl, but the general course of their relationship remains the same in Alex's mind, and since they've been close and open with each other Alex now has no reason to suspect Kara would have kept this from her for 4 years.

I hope that Kara pointed out that Alex no longer knows who SG is and she wants Nia to keep it that way.

Also that while Lena is in the dark, Brainy, James and Jonn know who she is.

Well, when Brainy had his knowledge of Supergirl's identity compartmentalized, he said she and Kara looked nothing alike.

I think that when you know your sister well, you wouldn't suspect her to be a random celebrity who looks like her; would be a little offensive if she suggests it as more than a joke, so Alex might be easier to fool, not harder. Some people look insanely alike, though. You don't seriously suggest they are the same person, and if you don't remember making the joke before and you hate the other person, you don't make it.

It's strange that the government's facial recognition doesn't catch them, though. Or Lena. Or anyone who has seen Kara's reports on TV.

P.S. It's a bit of an embarrassing confession, but the show is successfully fooling my brain sometimes. Have no idea what the psychological explanation for that is, but I'm sometimes deeply convinced Supergirl and Kara Danvers are different people. Say, when Supergirl approached Alex last week.

Similarly, when watching Orphan Black, I had a hard time remembering that Allison was played by the same actress as Sarah, Cosima, and the rest. Those bangs and the way she changed her voice made her seem like a totally different person to me.

That's because Maslany did an outstanding job and deserved her Emmy. :techman:

I had the same thing with Battlestar Galactica, especially with the Sixes (not surprisingly, since they're the ones who dressed and behaved with the most variation). My theory was that drama has sort of trained us to accept the same actor in different roles, so it doesn't take much to get us to recognize the same face as being two different people.

I think there's a difference between consciously suspending disbelief about an actor being more than one person and actually not recognizing them in a different role, or forgetting that they're the same actor even when you already know it. For me with Allison on Orphan Black, part of the reason was that the bangs changed my perception of the shape of her face, so she looked like a different person to me.

I've been waiting until this season is on Netflix to watch it, but I couldn't resist a peek on what is going on. Suffice it to say, I'll be skipping this season. Wiping Alex's mind, fucking really (why not just turn the DEO leader into an amnesiac? Anything is better then wiping your allies mind)? The DEO being hostile to Supergirl for literally no reason? Did the Flash Season 4 writers transfer to Supergirl?

No one has ever really given a shit about Supergirl's identity outside of villains, but suddenly the whole government is out to ID Superman's cousin. Its almost like a bunch of extremely lazy writers who don't really know comics decided to just throw ancient, painfully bad cliches in to create cheap drama. After giving Season 3 a chance and liking it I was interested in Season 4, but I shouldn't have been because literally every 4th Season of a CW show is terrible. The 4th Season was the worst season of Flash, and Arrow's season 4 is literally the worst thing the CW shows have ever produced (and its hard to be worse then post Season 1 Legends of Tomorrow).

But at least Season 5 of Arrow and Flash were/are big improvements, so if Supergirl gets a season 5 it should be pretty good. I guess I'll be watching the show later in the year then I thought.

Skipping the season would be a mistake: the initial batch of eight episodes (before the hiatus) was tight, smart, topical -- easily the best and most consistent run the show has had since the first season.

I can't disagree with you about more recent developments, however. Secret identity shenanigans are rarely very interesting, and Alex's mindwipe, while emotionally fraught, is contrived in concept and baffling in execution; even cursory consideration makes it obvious it could never work, because Kara's identity is too deeply and intricately woven into Alex's life. Simply removing all associated memories would leave huge mental gaps that would be terrifying and unmistakable and would impair her ability to function, so I guess J'onn basically rewrote her entire life story on the fly? An impressive trick, but what happens the first time she talks to Eliza? Did Kara loop her in on the deception, too? Does she have to learn every intricacy of Alex's new fictional history in order to safely have a casual conversation with her daughter?

It's all kind of nonsensical, and worse, it's a diversion and a distraction from the story, characters, and themes that were being developed so strongly earlier in the season. Hope we get back to those as the show's central focus again soon.

I agree and what's worse is when she gets her memories back you will have like 5 more episodes dealing with angst over that or they will sweep it under the rug in one episode as if it never happened which doesn't sound all that compelling.
