Skipping the season would be a mistake: the initial batch of eight episodes (before the hiatus) was tight, smart, topical -- easily the best and most consistent run the show has had since the first season.
I can't disagree with you about more recent developments, however. Secret identity shenanigans are rarely very interesting, and Alex's mindwipe, while emotionally fraught, is contrived in concept and baffling in execution; even cursory consideration makes it obvious it could never work, because Kara's identity is too deeply and intricately woven into Alex's life. Simply removing all associated memories would leave huge mental gaps that would be terrifying and unmistakable and would impair her ability to function, so I guess J'onn basically rewrote her entire life story on the fly? An impressive trick, but what happens the first time she talks to Eliza? Did Kara loop her in on the deception, too? Does she have to learn every intricacy of Alex's new fictional history in order to safely have a casual conversation with her daughter?
It's all kind of nonsensical, and worse, it's a diversion and a distraction from the story, characters, and themes that were being developed so strongly earlier in the season. Hope we get back to those as the show's central focus again soon.
