Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

One of the things I really liked about the new 52 Superman's costume was that it was essentially just the shield and everything else in the suit was created from Kryptonian science. Basically his street clothes just converted into his suit (which was actually Kryptonian armor) when he wanted to change to Superman and then it changed back when he returned to being Clark Kent.

I just don't get this recent obsession with putting Superman in armor. I mean, not only does it seem conceptually inappropriate for a character who isn't a soldier or a warrior, but there is nobody on Earth who has less need for body armor than Superman, aside from Supergirl and Power Girl -- both of whom, I should add, are still shown in the comics to dress rather more scantily. It's the sexist double standard in comic-book art -- the women are usually in body-hugging spandex that often shows a lot of skin, even when it would be far more practical to cover up more, but the men are almost completely covered in elaborate body armor, even when they have no practical need to be covered up so much. The men's costumes are designed as if they were soldiers, and the women's are designed as if they were gymnasts or swimsuit models.

In the story, he found the armor on Brainiac's ship. It was his family's and his by inheritance so he took it. The "armor" really didn't serve a purpose but by using it he was paying tribute to his Krypton and "El" family roots.

Of course the writers found a way to justify it, but the point is that they chose to go in that direction to begin with. They didn't have to.

I mean, let's face it, the reason so many comic-book characters are wearing heavier, more complicated costumes in recent years is because that's what movie superheroes have done. It started with X-Men and the desire of filmmakers to get away from colored spandex (X-Men even made a derisive wisecrack about it) in favor of more "realistic" costumes, or at least more hyperdetailed costumes that they think will look better on a huge movie screen. And the comics, in turn, have been trying to imitate the movies. So whatever in-story excuses the writers make up for the costumes are beside the point. In reality, they're just following the trend.

It's a shame she won't be a regular anymore, but it's still nice to hear she will be back.

It might help the show shift focus more on Supergirl and Superman. Having some Cat Grant is better than having overkill Cat Grant or none at all. I'm going to miss her though.
