Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

More in recent times, by writers that seem to think that the only way to have their character look good is to make Superman look weak.

Again, this is not true. As long as I've been reading comics (the early seventies), Superman has fought villains who have overpowered him initially and sometimes left him wounded and beat up. Superman has then had to use his wits and ingenuity to come up with a plan to defeat that villain.

You seem to be using the Superman from the fifties and sixties to defend your argument as those stories presented more of the types of situations you are referring to.

In all fairness, a hero that never loses a battle (or suffers a setback) is a rather boring character.
I respectfully disagree.

Case in point

One-punch Man
One-Punch Man tells the story of Saitama, an extremely overpowered superhero, who has grown bored by the absence of challenge in his fight against evil and seeks to find a worthy opponent.
He wins every fight with just one punch, and it's probably one of the best manga of the last years :D

in this case, we have a fictional character written out of character to make another fictional character seem stronger.

That's a matter of interpretation. In the episodes last season, when they side lined Superman and only showed his boots, I would have definitely agreed with the statement above. But in the Supergirl finale, Superman dishes out a lot of punishment. He even seems to be winning against Supergirl in a couple moments. It is only in the end, when Supergirl manages to get in a perfect back handed upper cut that she wins. Superman was definitely not weak in the finale.

Despite the name of the manga/anime being One Punch Man, some times hes not even the focus of the issue/episode. I think that is also what keeps it fresh.

So why is the Kryptonian heat vision in this show blue instead of red?

Maybe it's ultraviolet instead of infrared. Who knows what spectra of melty beams Kryptonians can shoot out their eye holes?

Remember when people used the Supergirl thread to talk about Supergirl? Those were the days..

I'm guessing it will get back there as the topic naturally flows there, but that's the thing about Superman--he's a heavyweight character, so whether you think he was misused or not, it's a topic of discussion in an episode like the one that just aired. If Batman or Wonder Woman appears, they would dominate the conversation too for awhile, and for what it's worth, Wonder Woman would make a great appearance if they can ever pull it off.

Just because Superman is the better known character it doesn't mean he's always the first option. As you pointed there's recently been Smallville, and countless other incarnations, and part of the backlash with BvS is Superman/Batman fatigue. A Supergirl series gives audiences a new(ish) character who many people will know little about, and attract audiences that way.

In addition, female superheroes are slowly making their way into the mainstream more and more, which Supergirl caters to A, from a moneymaking jumping on a trend way but also more importanlty B, the series has always been about female empowerment, just like BtVS, so no, I don't see why the producers would have gone with Superman if they had the option.
I agree their is a audience for female superheros but even then I think they would go for Wonder Woman or Catwoman or even Harley Quinn first if they had a choice. The biggest problem with Supergirl is she always feels like second rate Superman. They are way to similar down to their costume and powers. I'm not sure if the character is ever going to really escape Superman's shadow. This show has done a okay job because the actress is fun and they have tried to be topical but I sometimes feel that is hurt by the show wanting to be light hearted romp and yet address important issue's. I think what they are trying to do is great but I just think they haven't been as creatively effective at doing as a show like "Buffy" in the past. I do think it's way better than season 1 because of Alex's romance but they could really spice things up with some more character conflict and a more shades of grey aproach to storytelling.

But what if Wonder Woman were to beat up Superman?

It would be the same issue--Superman is the granddaddy of all heroes. He shouldn't lose to anyone. Now if Wonder Woman beat up anyone else, male or female, I'm fine with it. That includes Supergirl.

I would think Supergirl would be stronger, but Wonder Woman is more of a badass.
