JJ Abrams' ego overpowering the franchise? As in "it's my story, and my story alone?"
From what i've read online, JJ had nothing to do with this decision. Bob Orci was on trekmovie doing an informal q&a and I think he said that none of them were directly involved in it. Are you just making an assumption, or has this been stated somewhere with sources?

Never read too much into corporate drone speak - what is said in PR and press comments often bears no relationship to the truth.

Clearly someone is lying. The statement from Pocket implies the writers needed them to step back, and the comment from one of the writers is that they had nothing to do with it.
I doubt we will be told what really happened.
But I am hopeful they will eventually publish these books.

No, these official public statements are carefully worded so that no one individual gets targeted for hate mail by wacky fans.

Rio is actually a really good album in the tradition of Roxy Music and Japan, albeit more pop and less sophisticated. Just happened to suddenly catch on with teenybopper girls, which didn't help their credibility with rock fans. Still, David Bowie brought them along as his opening act on the Glass Spider tour in 1987, which is the only reason I happened to see Duran Duran live. And if you're running down David Bowie, man, you're walking on the fighting side of me.

Well, good luck with that. After all, it's not as though I have any experience with that sort of thing. None, whatsoever. Totally green in that area. Pure as newly fallen snow.
