Summer nuTrek novels pulled-TrekMovie.Com

I wasn't planning on getting these books right away, since I wasn't particularly fond of ST XI. But nonetheless it's a catastrophe, for all involved, Pocket Books, the Authors and of course the fans who have been waiting for the books.
Now let's fingers, that Pocket Books is rushing some titles to fill the gap with at least something, everything else wouldn't make sense from an economical point of view. Better sell something than nothing....
And they defiently have enough material to fill those months: Crucible, Slings and Arrows, CoE Out of the Cocoon, Myriad Universes Shattered Lights. Maybe it's not a perfect solution, but still better than nothing.

Damn! These would have been the first Star Trek books I'd bought in 20 years, I was looking forward to them! :klingon:

I'm not interested in any of the Prime Universe books - too much to catch up on.

Hey, I'm not saying I like it any more than you do. But I guess were not allowed to even talk about things like this around here without being mocked. :shifty:
I wasn't mocking, I promise. I was just trying to point out a logic problem, that's all.

That said, the blame for the cancellation (or indefinite hold, or whatever you want to call it) can in all likelihood be laid at Bad Robot's door. That a year ago they were open to the idea of original novels, now they're not, and they had Licensing pull the plug. That's my guess, and I wouldn't begin to theorize as to the motives.

The impression I got when the books were announced was that Pocket was thinking they'd fill the gap year between movies, thinking that the sequel would be along in 2011.

That being the case, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them come out in 2011, and even less surprised to see them in, say, May 2012.

That's just my deduction though.

Of course if this was the Dr Who line, Justin Richards would just lock himself away for a weekend and write four new books to fill the gap...

But for those of use who already have all the SCE/CoE, this is nothing new.

If you can honestly tell me that you've read every single ST book ever written, my sincere congratulations. I remember - once - when I could say that. And then came "Mission Gamma".

I think what's happened is tat JJ & crew want to keep consistant with the ti-in material and until the script for the next movie is actually written, this cannot be done. If the books come out before the script, it would limit what they are able to write in the next movie. This makes sense. More so then a lot of the other speculations.

Man, I hate JJ Abrams and his cronies for doing this to us. I was really, really looking forward to Greg Cox's The Hazards of Concealing, and now they've just gone and spat on our hopes. I hope Abrams has a car crash.

then they could save money by putting them on "hold".

Doesn't work that way. The bookshops have an expectation of twelve new MMPBs per year, one per month, and Pocket would be extremely unwise to suddenly abandon a run of four months worth of books. It doesn't save money; putting them on hold as manuscripts just means that Pocket doesn't get money back in for what has been outlaid so far. Pocket has paid for a license to put out product. They have a contract with CBS to deliver product. can't just sit on their hands to save money, I wouldn't think.

Lovely attitude from a Star Trek fan. :rommie:

Why is maintenance of internal consistency bad? Because you have to wait a little long to read some books?

I hope Abrams has a car crash.
even as a joke, this is extremely bad form. nothing is as important as a human life, especially when it's something as insignificant as entertainment and make believe.

everyone else, this post is not an invitation to start discuss this topic, you have the TNZ for that, let's keep the the thread on topic.

Thank you.

It won't have been Abrams (or Orci, Kurtzman or Lindelof) - it'll be some nameless marketing chimp in a back office, cos they run everything nowadays.

Having said all that, it does jibe with some interesting things that have appeared on the S&S website in the past few days. Specifically, their Trek schedule all of a sudden includes TPB omnibuses for SCE: Out of the Cocoon and What's Past, as well as something titled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Untitled Paperback #1 (another TPB), which I suspect may be a reprint of the three Original Series SA books ("Saw the movie? Want to know how they met before The Original Series?").

Oh, that would actually be pretty cool if you're right. I've been hoping the YA Academy books would get reissued in MMPB or TPB form someday, since I never got to read most of them the first time around.

And to those who are reacting to this news with anger or bitterness, let's try to keep a sense of perspective. Three days ago, a terrible earthquake struck the capital of Haiti and killed tens of thousands of people. Now the country's infrastructure is in ruins and its population is in desperate need. That's a real crisis. That's something worth getting emotional about (and acting on by providing whatever charitable aid you can). Next to that, this news is inconsequential. So let's not overreact.

I understand and agree with the logic of holding off on those nuTrek novels, but they never should have let those novels get this far in the production process. It's a nightmare for the publishers, the editors, the writers, and the fans who were looking forward to these novels. I particularly feel for the writers. It's must be tough to think that your work may never reach bookstores.
