Summer nuTrek novels pulled-TrekMovie.Com

I wouldn't mind if they reprinted Andrew Robinson's A Stitch in Time :). It's tough to find...

Maybe they should do a quick and dirty internet poll of trek fandom and see which novels folks want to see reprinted and do that to fill out the schedule.

^I'm hoping Slings & Arrows is collected in it's entirety under one cover like Mere Anarchy was last year.
I won't agree or disagree, but there was a stronger unifying thread to MA, that lent itself to being collected in one volume. The stories that make up S&A are more independent of one another, and it would not suffer so much from being divided into two mass markets.

Time to have Peter David and KRAD sit in their homes and bang out a novel each in 14 days. Come on, it's been done before, and these two can do it. :bolian:

KRAD -> Klingon Empire mass-market paperback.
PAD -> TNG mass-market paperback.

No matter what they choose as a stopgap, if anything (and I agree with Allyn that something should be placed in the schedule), the pulling of the new titles still sucks. :(

I was very much looking forward to these, and all four authors have my sympathies.

That is very dispointing news, I so very much looking forward to the books. What now? I was hopeing since we wont have the sequel until two years from now, that will have something to hold us fans of the movie to hold on to until the movie comes out, now it seems hopeless! We already got a big dispointmet of the hold on the second wave of Star Trek XI toys now this? Come on we got to have something from this movie, some type of tie in from this timeline or anything. I was looking forward to see these books as we dont have this timeline yet in the books. Well if they are not going to have these books for the summer, can we have more TOS era books in thier place? I still want to see more those books besides VOY,ENT,DS9,TNG books. We always see alot of those books but not enough TOS books and now no STXI books. It just dont seem fair. Anyways, it might not seem fair to us fans who are fans of the movie, but its not fair to the authers of the books, who worked so hard on those books. I hope its not on hold permentaly, I still like to see those books out, as some us fans including authers as well. I feel so bad for us fans who was looking forward to it. Anyways, since its still TOS even though new timeline that was orginaly coming out this summer, why not put TOS from the prime time line in its place? That way we can still have TOS type books for the summer. That's just my oppion and how I feel.

Possible Spoilers.

I've heard rumors that the next film may take place between the end of the Narada's destruction and the final scene in the film.

I would be prepared to bet every strip of gold-pressed latinum that ever passed through Quark's grubby fingers they haven't the slightest intention of doing this.

"The Entropy Effect" was on hiatus for about sixteen months, IIRC.
I got that book, I haven't got around to reading it yet. Don't you think since the movie is TOS based that they should still release more TOS books in place of the new Trek books they were orginaly gonna have for the summer?Or they could at least reissue old TOS books thats hard to find in the gap that orginally was for the new Trek books.I think they should since here lately all we been getting is TNG,DS9,VOY,ENT books and not enough TOS books. I know for sure what of I seen of new releases so far thats what its been. There just hasnt been alot of TOS new releases lately expect the one recentaly released of TOS in miror univerere, but thats the only as of now.

I definitely feel for the authors who have invested so much time and energy on crafting up these stories. I'm sure they were looking forward to sharing these stories just as much as fans were looking forward to reading them.

Having said that, I must admit that I wasn't planning to read the novels set in the JJ-verse. I know that they are intended to be stand-alone stories, that would have no major impact on the sequel, but I kinda feel like the new Trek universe should be left alone for a while. Wait until they've pumped out a few films and then see where the novels could fill-in some blanks or expand upon certain ideas. Right now, it just seems too early to be pushing tie-ins. I understand the marketing rationale behind it (wanting to capitalize on the success of the film), but from a storytelling perspective, I think it's smart for Pocket to hold off on telling these stories until later. I am definitely curious to know whether this decision originated from Pocket or the folks at the studio.

I am definitely curious - and a little concerned - about what Pocket plans to use to fill this new, massive gap in their schedule. I don't see how the Typhon Pact series could be pushed forward by over four months unless everyone starts working in fast-forward. Would Pocket even choose to fill in the gaps, or do you think they'll try to cut costs by just not releasing anything?

I am disappointed in this decision, and think it might not turn out all that well for Pocket. They're depriving themselves (or rather, Bad Robot/Paramount are depriving them - despite Pocket's statement, this sounds like a decision from on high) of what could have been a major source of revenue - these books would have been more aggressively marketed, and pushed out into places the ordinary tie-ins wouldn't normally go. A large hole in the MMPB schedule will also not help - it won't be filled by new novels, as there isn't time.

It's also a bit galling, considering all those interviews that Orci and Kurtzman made before the film came out where they praised the novels, and how they were able to go places the TV series and films didn't or couldn't.

Having said all that, it does jibe with some interesting things that have appeared on the S&S website in the past few days. Specifically, their Trek schedule all of a sudden includes TPB omnibuses for SCE: Out of the Cocoon and What's Past, as well as something titled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Untitled Paperback #1 (another TPB), which I suspect may be a reprint of the three Original Series SA books ("Saw the movie? Want to know how they met before The Original Series?").

Still, these are not the same as the four ST09 novels, and will certainly not yield the same revenues.

Man, I bet Jaime Costas is having a really shitty first couple months on the job, huh? All this continuity to catch up to, all these books in random stages of editing, and now suddenly the higher-ups cancel the books that are four months away and there's a four month gap in the schedule? Geez.

The really crappy thing about it is the fact that they waited until now to pull the plug - how long were these books on the board, and they (I'm with DarkHorizon in that this sounds like a decision from on high, not from Pocket) choose NOW to say 'Eh, maybe not now.' I mean, just a handful of months away and then the rug gets pulled out from under them? I hope that after the sequel these books all get a chance to be released, since I was looking forward to all four of them.

Maybe the Slings and Arrows will be released as three MMPBs, with two to a volume. That fills up three months, and maybe it'd be enough to get the schedule kinks worked out.

Well, since SCE started releasing with 4 eBooks per MMPB, that seems a little weak.

Hmm...speaking of SCE, maybe one of the empty spots could be used to finally release the Out of the Cocoon TPB that keeps getting delayed.

Except SCE doesn't come out in MMPB, it comes out in TPB. My understanding is that they don't fill the one-book-per-month slot, so putting it out wouldn't count in the production schedule.

That's why I suggested the three book version of Slings and Arrows in MMPB, allow them to fill the most open slots with the material that already exists.
