Summer nuTrek novels pulled-TrekMovie.Com

Firstly, sorry to hear about this, I hope that Christopher's, Greg's, David's and Alan's stories see the light of day sooner rather than later.

Secondly, it reads that Pocket didn't want to jump the gun on telling new stories in the JJverse, not a total surprise, but netherless, still a kick in the arse to the writers, I assume though you have been paid and that you can't really say much on the matter just yet.

Understandable - sounds like the PTB have nixed them as they plan the next film - but very disappointing, for us readers but even more for the four authors. What a shame for them, must be gutting, and I hope we get to read their novels, which I presume were all done or nearly so, at some point after Trek XII hits the theatres. :(

That's really unfortunate. I was looking forward to those a lot. I hope we don't just get a 4-month gap in Trek publishing.

Have these books been written or have they simply agreed to an outline? Either way, sorry that the authors will have to wait.

I had not planned on reading these books. While I thought JJ's movie was alot of fun, I'm still not sold on it. It just does not feel right. Guess I'm too set on TOS and its movies. Maybe they should have invented a new crew and characters.

Hopefully, once the studio decides what direction they are taking the story, the novels can be tweaked to fit the vision.

I feel bad for saying what I said on the other thread. I was just chatting, really. I hope for the best for these writers who possibly looked forward to money in their family budgets, and who are now going to see their "babies" festering in limbo. :(

I imagine Christopher and the others will be along to tell us, but by this stage I'd be very surprised that if they weren't already finished they were very far along :(

Not much to say; I know about as much as the rest of you. I got the news this morning and I don't have any insight into the decision-making processes up at that level. All I can say is that I appreciate the expressions of sympathy and regret, and that I share the hope that these books will eventually get to see the light of day, perhaps once the second film comes out.

All the books have been written, though they're at various stages in the editing process.

If they wrote the books as contracted, they'll get/have been paid, regardless of how long before they eventually appear - it's not Trek (or S&S), but I got paid for Born For Adversity in 2006, and it's only coming out now; same for Melissa, which ended up not coming out at all.

Maybe they realize it isn't good timing, and it would be better to coordinate the books with the release of the second movie.

They have two more years to co-ordinate that, so could easily have had a second quartet in 2011, and a third in 2012 to come out alongside...

Even though the novels are not canon, I think the producers want more time and freedom to establish this new time line.

That's good news on that point but I still feel bad for the authors. And on a selfish note, I was looking forward to reading some books by some of my favorite Trek authors. I hope they come out eventually but if they come out about the time of the movie, that's 2 years isn't it?

I'd be surprised if Pocket would be able to move things around fast enough to fill in the gap. I mean the 2nd Typhon Pact novel is set for November and I believe David Mack is still writing it. I'll be the first to admit I know squat about the publishing business but I'm guessing maybe, possibly, one, and if we're amazingly lucky, two, of those 4 spots are filled this year but I would tend to doubt that, what with the reduction in editing staff. I hope I'm wrong but I think we're looking at a dry summer...

This is bull! I was looking forward to the books a whole lot. I wonder if there will be any replacements, or if there will just be a 4 month gap in the summer with no new Star Trek books.

This makes sense to me. I'm betting the pressure came from JJ's camp/the studio to not impinge on any storytelling possibilities they wanted to pursue. Disappointing, though. While not a huge fan of the movie, I always enjoy well-told Star Trek stories.
