Summer 2011 sci fi movies

This summer sucks, let's talk about next year.

I'm counting the days till The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I. :rommie: Okay seriously, here's my list:

Immortals - Tarsem Singh directs Mickey Rourke in what I'm sure will be beyond over-the-top Greek myth.

Battle: Los Angeles - Aaron Eckhard as a Marine kicking alien butt.

Cowboys & Aliens - Sad that Robert Downey Jr. bailed on this, but the addition of Sam Rockwell provides some compensation.

Captain America - I'm feeling fairly optimistic about this one...the other superhero movies on the roster, not so much. Except for...

Thor - Not at all sure how they can make this guy "relatable" to modern moviegoing audiences, but I'll give em a chance.
 
No more greek mythology for me. Two shitty movies this year were enough.

Lots of alien invader movies next year. Invading, being chased...cowboys, giant robots...

"Night Chronicles: Devil", so Shamalamadingdong thinks he's Rod Serling now? I'm kidding, he's been thinking that for a decade at least.
 
This summer has "Inception" that's more than good enough for me. "Cowboys and Aliens", "Thor", "Green Lantern" (you forgot to include it), and "Captain America" are what interest me. There are probably more that I have forgot.
 
Holy shit, 2011 is full of fucking garbage. Other than Thor, and even there only by the skin of Kenneth Branagh's teeth, I can't say I'm really looking forward to any of those...

I mean, I should be looking forward to GL, but I kind of know they're going to mess it up.

The only really exciting thing on that list was Mary Elizabeth Winstead in a pink wig.

Now, Duncan Jones has a 2011 film, Source Code, that looks okay, but also seems a bit like make-work until financing is more secure for the much-anticipated Mute ("Moon 2") which was supposed to be a 2011 release, but I'm not sure it will be any more... I guess I can be excited about Jones' sophomore effort, even if it isn't the second outing in the Moon universe I was hoping for.
 
My list from, err, that list:

Red Riding Hood - Amanda Seyfried, with whom I was recently very impressed in Chloe. The darker they go, the better.
Devil - Interesting twist on an old concept. Could be anything from disastrous to a new Cube. Shyamalan's involvement adds intrigue.
Contagion - The composition of the production team promises competence and authenticity, something seriously lacking in the genre going all the way back to The Andromeda Strain.
Sucker Punch - "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns". And dragons. And B-52s. And an all-female ensemble cast. Guilty pleasure?

Not interested in the superhero trash that dominates the top half of the list. :lol:

Thread bump because Devil has been bumped to September of this year.

I can see myself going to see Cap and Thor, that's it.

I haven't seen anything but Iron Man 2 this summer. I'm in such a pit right now that I can't drag myself to the cinema as much as I wanted to see Inception and The A-Team. As a result, my Summer 2011 Sci-Fi movies will be everyone else's 2010 Sci-Fi movies when they get shown on Sky.
 
Green Lantern is at the top of my list. I've been looking forward to a big-screen adaptation of Hal Jordan for a long time, so unless the film totally sucks, this should be the film to beat for me next year.

I believe X-Men counts as sci-fi as well? I'm looking forward to Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer's X-Men: First Class, coming out in June.

Source Code sounds incredibly interesting. The script was absolutely magnetic, and the director -- Duncan Jones -- is a truly gifted director, having made my favorite film of 2009... Moon.

The Contagion script was mind-blowing, so I'm looking forward to that, and Steven Soderbergh's first sci-fi movie since his remake of Solaris.

Captain America and Thor both seem interesting, even though I'm more of a DC kind of guy.
 
Surprised Pirates of the Caribbean hadn't been mentioned yet. No more Orlando Bloom!

Don't forget Transformers: Shockwave vs. McDreamy.

I've never seen any of the Pirates movies.

After the last debacle there's absolutely no way I would pay to see another Transformers film.

I wasn't as impressed by Moon as most; but having now read a little about Source Code, add it to my list.

Also, it isn't sci-fi, but the American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been bumped to just sneak into 2011: December 21st. Looks like this'll be a quick one for Fincher; I'll still be amazed if whoever they've cast as Lisbeth comes within a mile of Noomi Rapace's portrayal.

I'm intrigued by that. I just saw the original, and I thought it was pretty solid. I remember watching it, with the foreknowledge that Fincher was directing the remake, and thinking it was a good fit for him.

It's a perfect fit. I was initially dismissive of the remake, but when I heard that David Fincher was directing it and that Daniel Craig had been cast as Blomkvist, that changed things considerably. Now my only major concern is re: Lisbeth. The Swedish sequels are considerable steps down from the first film - not least of all because of an unfortunate change in director - but still eminently watchable solely upon the strength of Noomi Rapace's performance. Incidentally, that's her (from The Girl who Played with Fire) in my avatar. :)

I agree. Honestly even though most of the "Millennium" films are sort of mundane but interestingly done mystery thrillers, the strength of those movies rests on the shoulders of Rapace's strong, endearing, and genuine performance. That's the biggest hurdle the remake has to surpass in my opinion is topping Rapace's performance in those films.

Daniel Craig is perfect casting as Blomkvist, but I'm worried about Lisbeth. A part of hopes Fincher finds an unknown that is perfect for the part. Hearing rumors that Carey Mulligan is in contention worries me, but fortunately latest news is that they are still searching for their Lisbeth.

These maybe. Loved Moon and the latter I suspect has a possibility it won't be The Good German.
 
After seeing that trailer, I'm kicking Thor off my list. Looks way too pedestrian considering the subject matter is a bunch of Asgardian gods!
 
Battle Los Angeles actually sounds kind of interesting, and Cowboys and Aliens seems like it could be a fun movie. Otherwise, I'll probably check out the superhero movies if only because I always do for some reason.
