Sulu's daughter: WTF? (Generations)

Okay, first of all, WTF? There's NO indication in the previous movies that Sulu has a wife or child. NONE.

So what?
Sulu was a glorified spear-carrier in TOS. TOS wasn't the soap opera later Trek was, it had no need to tell us what time Ensign no-name took a leak.

And furthermore, everyone knew George Takei is gay. Yes he only "came out" a few years ago, but everyone he worked with knew it for years. So why would they give him a daughter? Was it to taunt Takei, saying "ha, you'll never have one of these in real life!" How horrible if so.

Wow. That's three different levels of stupid.

Saying that Hikaru Sulu is gay is like saying that Captain Kirk is a Canadian Jewish Shakespearean captain, which when you add it all up, ain't the truth! ;)

Okay, first of all, WTF? There's NO indication in the previous movies that Sulu has a wife or child. NONE. In TUC he's surveying gasesous anomolies in the Natural Zone for a year or something but he never mentions how much he's missing his wife and kids back home. When he time travels back in Star Trek 4 he doesn't say "I NEED TO SAVE THE FUTURE FOR MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER!!" And so on. This was crap. They just threw it in there for no good reason. WTF were they thinking giving Sulu a daughter?

Yeah, and everybody knows he's gay, so we weren't fooled one bit.

Jokes aside, well, the fact that it was never mentioned doesn't mean it isn't true. We can't possibly know every detail about all the characters.

So it's only canon if it's seen on screen, but if it doesn't adhere to established canon already then it's non-canon?

Jeepers and I thought Christian Religion was confusing! :guffaw:

This inability to distinguish between reality and fiction is why Star Trek fans get such a bad rep. Just because Takei is gay doesn't mean Sulu is or should be. It's called "acting".

We might expect to know about the personal lives of main characters, but Sulu was always little more than a background extra with a name. There was never anything on his personal life because there was simply no need for it.

How can Scotty have a natural Scottish accent? James Doohan didn't!!!

How can Chekov have a natural Russian accent? Walter Koenig doesn't!!!

How can Kirk be dead? William Shatner isn't!!!

OMG!

Don't even get me started on those pointy ears!

Sulu is not gay.
Never was. Never will be.
Sure, no indications of that. Well, besides that one time when he was going around half-naked and sweaty, wildly waving around a foil... ;)

Seriously, no indications. But I think if would be cool if we found out that Demora had two dads: Hikaru and Brad.

So you're saying that Kirk is full of shit? How can that be, when William Shatner isn't---

Oh. Wait. We might actually have something there (at least, according to his co-stars)! :p

This is one of the dumbest statements I've seen on here in a long time....Takei is an a-c-t-o-r. Star Trek is a TV /movie series

1) What makes you think that just because Sulu had a daughter, he must have had a wife?

2) What makes you think that Takei's sexual orientation is in any way relevant to the character he's playing?

3) Why do you assume Takei will never have a daughter just because he's gay?

4) Read Star Trek: The Captain's Daughter by Peter David. It's a really great novel that justifies Demora's existence.

5) It's not like Sulu ever got a lot of character development in the first place....

Just because the actor is gay in real life doesn't mean he has to be as an actor, and second of all, Sulu's daughter or his life is non-essential. None of the characters (besides Kirk, Spock, and McCoy) lives were really touched on that much so who's to say Sulu never had a daughter. I'm fine with it.
