Sulu vs Chekov???

^ :wtf: I think there's a misunderstanding: In my earlier post I was just referring to the flashback footage in "Trials And Tribble-ations" (re-used from "The Trouble With Tribbles"). So, all you see from Walter Koenig in the DS9 episode is originally from TOS. But technically that's one more Trek appearance, isn't it? Sorry if this wasn't clear.

LOL I was confused at first too, I blocked out the whole episode. I was trying to place him as a cameo or under a pile of so much forehead latex I didnt recognize him

It's to bad that the budget cuts didn't allow both actors (Takei and Koenig) to act on more episodes together. The episodes that they were both on; seem to work better, when you had both speaking actors in both helm and nav positions on the bridge. THE ULTIMATE COMPUTER is a good example of this, I think!!! :bolian:

Yes, I would have want to see them together more often, too. But the way it is now makes the episodes in which they actually appear together so much more special. At least to me. ;)

Re: Sulu & Chekov

It's funny, I thought this thread was about the somewhat comedic relationship they have. You know, their friendly banter on the bridge in episodes like "Amok Time" and "The Deadly Years." I knew Chekov took a lot of the focus away from the frequently absent Sulu, but I never realised they were in so few shows together... curious...

Re: Sulu & Chekov

Don't remember where I read it, but the thing that kept Takei tied up with The Green Berets longer than planned was rain. The film was shot partially in Georgia and it rained like crazy for several days. Wayne was about to let Takei return to LA to rejoin ST when the decision was made to shoot in the rain. Anyone who's seen the film can readily recognize which sequences where involved (Captain Nim's intro, etc.).

Do you have any idea of where, they were filming in Georgia??

Re: Sulu & Chekov

IMDB says Fort Benning. That's obvious from the training sequences in the first part of the film. Possibly there's enough forest on and around the base to provide the other locations.

Fort Benning is only 60 miles away from my home town of Americus. :) :) Thanks, for the information.... :)

The thread title led me to think this was about which character one preferred. If that had been the case then I'd have said Sulu, because Chekov often came off as a little too much like a cliche.

This is a good thread that brought up some interesting information about Chekov and Sulu. I always wondered why we didn't see Sulu in every episode, as he started appearing consecutively at the very beginning of the series ("The Man Trap", "Charlie-X", "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "The Naked Time", "The Enemy Within", etc.).

So, budgetary constraints and actor availability pretty much explains why we don't see Sulu in every episode and Chekov in every episode after his debut in Season 2. From a story perspective, I could see it easily explained as Sulu or Chekov were simply off duty for the timeline of the particular episode where they didn't appear.

I can understand why Takei wasn't keen on Koenig joining the crew, as this meant fewer appearances for him due to budgetary constraints (and thus less attention for Takei). But in the end, it worked out well for both. They're in every Star Trek original crew movie. :)

By the time Season 3 starts, I think Roddenberry recognized the appeal of both characters. If you look at that season, almost all of the episodes involving many bridge scenes have both Chekov and Sulu at navigation and helm respectively:

  • Spock's Brain
  • The Enterprise Incident
  • And The Children Shall Lead
  • Is There In Truth No Beauty
  • The Day of The Dove
  • For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky
  • Elaan of Troyius
  • Let That Be Your Last Battlefield
  • The Lights of Zetar
  • The Way To Eden
  • The Savage Curtain
  • Turnabout Intruder
Total episodes for Takei: 52
Total episodes for Koenig: 36

Well, except that Roddenberry would have had little to nothing to do with that decision, having largely abandoned the show by that point (his offices weren't even on the lot any more, if memory serves). I suppose it might have been Fred Freiberger who made the decision to include both actors - not sure.

Well, they're both thin and wiry but I think Sulu could take Chekov in Olympic-style wrestling.

In sissy-boy slap-fighting, I think Chekov would whip Sulu easily. I think Chekov would scream in pain more often as well. . .

Which is incorrect. George's voice appeared in more episodes than that-- even just as Sulu--including The Infinite Vulcan, The Time Trap, The Practical Joker, etc.

some of their best stuff is in amok time.

SULU: How do you figure it, Chekov? First we're going to Vulcan, then we're going to Altair, then we're headed to Vulcan again, and now we're headed back to Altair.
CHEKOV: I think I'm going to get space sick.

KIRK [OC]: Lieutenant, get me Admiral Komack at Starfleet Command, Sector Nine. Pipe it down to McCoy's office.
UHURA: Starfleet Command. Yes, sir.
CHEKOV: Mister Sulu, you don't think
SULU: Maybe you ought to plot a course back for Vulcan, just in case.

And STILL incorrect, I might add. :) If Takei does a voice in Yesteryear, it's not Sulu (who doesn't appear at all).

Love those scenes! :techman: I also like the banter in "The Deadly Years":

CHEKOV: "The needle won't hurt, Chekov!" "Roll over, Chekov!"...If I live any longer, I'm going to run out of samples!
SULU: You'll live.
CHEKOV: Ohh yes, I'll live...but I won't enjoy it.
