Very interesting read with respect to story and character building.

Great article! I chuckled at how perplexed he was at the holodeck nitpicking. It's really interesting to learn more about the writing process and what they're trying for in terms of narrative development.

I think it's good they let the actors ad lib. As I recall many of the DS9 cast said they practically needed an act of god to get a line changed - and that they had to follow the written script word for word. Hope ST: D gets a Blu-Ray release at some point and we get some Rainn Wilson ad libbed stuff that didn't make it into his episodes.

It would be nice for the bridge crew (Airham, etc.) to get more time. It's clear they're going to be the "TNG O'Brien" of the show, or at best at the Sulu/Checkov/Uhura level, but if they could at least get more individual lines it would probably flesh them out a bit more.

The doctor seems to be a secondary character as well, though at least he's getting dialogue.

I think the idea that the stories don't waste time is cute, but whether it's just PR nonsense or necessary self-talk is hard to say.
