Suicide bomber in Russia killed by spam?

So is this the first positive thing spammers can say they've accomplished?

Complete article from The Telegraph.

Black Widow attempted New Year Moscow attack but blew herself up by mistake

.....

The unnamed woman, who is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday, intended to detonate a suicide belt on a busy square near Red Square on New Year's Eve in an attack that could have killed hundreds.

Security sources believe a spam message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours before the planned attack triggered her suicide belt, killing her but nobody else.

.....

The phones are usually kept switched off until the very last minute but in this case, Russian security sources believe, the terrorists were careless.

So if you were in Red Square on New Year's Eve, you have to confront the fact that a spam message from a mobile phone operator might well have saved your life.

I don't know if that's frightening, hilarious or just embarrassing.

I'll go w/ frightening and hilarious for the people who were there, embarrassing for the terrorists.

I actually celebrated one New Year's Eve in Red Square in the late 1980's. Fabulous experience! Picturing that crowd being blown up... OMG...

Yes, I imagine it would have caused terrible damage and loss of life.

"Welcome! You've got-- BOOM!"

However it happened, I'm glad the attack backfired and nobody was hurt.

See, now if I was National Security/Homeland Security (whatever the variant is for said nation), I'd just start randomly txting every cellphone in the nation under the guise of testing a emergency alert system. Someone goes "boom", then you found your terrorist....or someone that forget to turn off their phone at the gas pump.

or someone that forget to turn off their phone at the gas pump.

That's just an urban legend. Cellphones don't really do that. Linky

It was a joke.

Though it would suck for the bomber is he/she was having second thoughts.

"I can't do it...I've got to much to live for...I'm calling my girlfriend and we'll go to the cops and we'll tell 'em everything (turns on phone) Hey a new text message from Tracf..BOOM!"
