Suggestions on how to set up a Star Trek-style light up bar?

My younger brother is getting a brand new apartment, and as I've mentioned elsewhere is a pretty big Star Trek fan (not a trekkie like me, a bit more casual, but oh well). His new apartment has a pass-through style bar between the kitchen and living room, and while he plans on buying bar stools and various liquers to serve guests (such as me LOL) he also wants to know if he can light the bar's surface from below the drinks ala Ten Forward and Quark's. While not entirely safe, as kids we used to use my dad's art light box as Trek-style lighting under our drinks, but I'd like a safer and more impressive option. I'm trying to find a non-permanent way he could recreate the classic Star Trek lit-surface bar for his apartment, such as a removable panel he can place on top of the bar that can be lit without having to structurally alter his bar. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers! :)

Look into electroluminescent panels. These are thin, low-power, can actually be cut to shape. An array of these with a translucent white plexiglass top should get you the effect you desire with a minimum of alteration to any existing counter surfaces.

WHAT IS THIS MAGIC. Light up, flexible material? THAT CAN BE CUT!?
Sorry, my mind has been blown. Truly, we are living in the future... LOL

Thank you so much for this suggestion! It's a great idea, and one I will probably end up implementing! :)

EDIT: Upon further investigation, these appear really small (7x5 inches) so this particular product may be a bit too small. I'm thinking I need a solid light that is somewhere in the 12x48 inch ballpark. While I doubt this product is available in such a relatively massive scale, rest assured I will probably find a use for this flexible cutable lightup MAGIC. LOL
