Subject matter which makes you skip a film or show

Zoloft

Vice Admiral
I don't care how good they are, there are many genres, topics and settings that will insure I will NEVER watch a particular show or movie. I actually don't watch that many movies, so don't be surprised that my list rules out most of what is made today:

1. superheroes
2. mafia or crime/police drama
3. medical drama
4. westerns (with the notable exception of Deadwood)
5. horror {"suspense" is ok)

What is your list?

For movies:

Despite being female, it takes a lot to get me to bother with any romantic comedy. Perhaps because they are almost always terrible.

Some topics have been done to death and I'm skeptical that any more can be said. Zombies are a good example. If you want to show me a truly groundbreaking zombie movie, though, I'm willing to change my mind.

For TV:

Anything from an overexposed genre. Cop/detective, doctor, lawyer shows. Spy shows are starting to wear out their welcome. Network comedies (too timid compared with cable). Reality TV.

You want me to watch a cop show, it better be the best frakkin cop show ever made.

That's pretty much my attitude too. I'm not a big fan of horror, or westerns, or crime dramas, or rom-coms, or even action-orientated TV shows, but if there's a show or film or computer game or book or piece of music, that is both a brilliant example of the genre, AND somehow transcends the genre and is accessible to non-believers, to the point that it'll make me look into the genre further or, dare I say, become one of the converted, then I'm all for it.

Slasher movies. Horror movies. Adam Sandler. Jay Leno.

I won't pay to see a romantic comedy (but I might check it out when it moves to TV unless there is something better on).

Mafia stuff, anything with Adam Sandler as the main character, romantic comedies, vampires, werewolves, zombies, aliens (with the big exception of Star Trek), anything with giant insects or humans mutated into insects, anything with Ray Romano, westerns, almost all movies/shows based on comic books, most movies that win high critical acclaim and end up winning a Best Picture Oscar because they are most likely way too long and boring for their own good.

Horror films, slasher films (utterly disgusted by things like "Scream" and "Saw" series), and love films where some American girl falls for a charmingly befuddled British guy (who may or may not die at the end) -- sorry, $9.50 is too much to pay for a film like that.

Unecessary remakes/re-visionings/reboots, movies aimed at teenagers, CGI fests, anything by Michael Bay, just about anything scored by Hans Zimmer.

I still can't bring myself to watch anything with ties to September 11th. While I was one never to yell "too soon." Think there are always room for movies on this subject. There is just to much personal connection with the event to watch it be dramatized. Maybe one day, just not sure when.

I usually avoid:

1. Adam Sandler (I did see Anger Management)
2. Medical Dramas (I remember when too many people said ER was the best show on and I wanted to put them in the ER)
3. Law and Order (Lawyer shows...ripped from todays hype...)
4. "Real" judge/court shows (If it ain't Judge Dredd...)
5. Any current sitcom with a laugh track/studio audience
6. torture horror movies
7. live action kid's movies (I make Goonies and Monster Squad exceptions, which are more tween movies, anyway)
8. Inpsirational movies about handicapped people (Radio, I am Sam, The Other Sister, My Left Foot)
9. Sarah Jessica Parker
10. Most reality television
11. Talking animals mixed with real actors (Mr. Ed was okay, but these Narnia and Golden Compass things...not my cup o'tea)
12. cartoon musicals
13. MTV...the entire fudging network.

- Doctor/Lawyer/Cop shows.
- Stoner Movies
- Fat Husband/Nagging Wife sitcoms
- Seth McFarlene
- Adam Sandler/Seth Rogen/Jack Black types
- Reality Television
- Slasher Films

I don't like spoof movies, gross comedies, gore...some horror is ok.
On tv...90210, Gossip Girl...etc. Reality TV is boring to me now.

I usually avoid anything advertised as a "triumph of the human spirit."

Thus, I will be skipping Precious and Invictus. I'll take a crappy love story instead.

I'll give any genre a try if it looks good. Except for horror. Never seen a horror movie I've liked, and doubt I ever will.

2. mafia or crime/police drama
So I suppose you've never watched Godfather films, The Sopranos, Homicide: LOTS, Prime Suspect, Cracker, The Wire,or The Shield, to name just a few? :wtf:

I can only say that you're losing a lot due to your narrow-mindedness.

I have some genres I like less than the others (like romantic comedies or slashers) but I'll even watch those if they are supposed to be really good, or have a director/actor/writer I like.

The one thing I'm avoiding at any cost is reality TV. Oh, and telenovelas.

Romantic comedies
Formulaic police procedurals (CSI's and the like...stuff like The Shield and The Wire are gold)
Saw-type torture porn horror movies

...that's pretty much it.
