Sub-Atomic Disruptors

If my memory serves me correctly in one of the episodes of Voyager Captain Braxton comes back in time in his ship the Aeon and fires a so called Sub-Atomic disruptor at Voyager.

How does that work then, do you think it literally disrupts matter on the subatomic level or is it itself subatomic in nature? and how do you think this differs in destructive power from perhaps lets say an antimatter beam? why would Starfleet suddenly change its main choice of weapon the phaser and start using disruptors? it seems that as far back as 2151 Earths being using Phasers so at what point in the future do you think maybe Starfleet scraps the phaser for the disrupter?

Who says it's a standard on SF ships in the 29th century ?

All we saw was 1 tiny ship fire an incredibly powerful beam capable of tearing up a ship far better than the 24th century counterparts were able to do.

And Braxton was preparing for that encounter, so he wanted to devise a way to take down Voyager most effectively.
Although I have to admit that with all of the technology at his disposal, he could have simply opened a temporal rift inside Voyager and destroy it like that :D
