STVI:TUC (Extended) in Anamorphic Widescreen?

You might be out of luck, if the first release isn't anamorphic. I think the film has only been released on DVD twice, and blu-ray once. The original DVD has the longer version, the 2-disc special edition has the flashes, and then the blu-ray has the original theatrical cut.

Not quite. The original DVD was not enhanced (anamorphic), while the 2-disc DVD was enhanced. They are both the extended cut. The blu-ray is enhanced, but is the cut w/ the flashes.

Doug

No, the blu-ray is definitely the original theatrical cut.

Yep. And the only one to have the original aspect ratio. :techman:

Exactly! Now, the original DVD had been part of several box sets (movies 1-9, movies 1-10) before the 2-disc DVD came out, and I wonder if in those box sets I could find an anamorphic version of that disc?

I'm asking this because I heard that there are two versions of the original Generations DVD as well. I have only seen the anamorphic version, but I remember people complaining that it wasn't. So maybe later pressings of TUC for inclusion in one of the box sets are anamorphic after all?

There were 2 versions of the Generations 2-disc set, the original was recalled due to some licensing issues with the included trailers. The version that eventually made it to shelves omitted the trailers.

No. The original one-disc DVD release from 1999 is the original extended home video edit, the one often referred to as having the "Scooby Doo ending," but without the flashes during the mind meld. The two-disc DVD release has the flashes, and so does the one-disc release that was produced at around the same time. Then the Blu-ray release is the theatrical cut, without either the extended scenes or the flashes.

My memory has failed me yet again! Sorry for the misinformation.

According to Memory Alpha, there were no releases between the original DVD and the Special Edition.

It's towards the bottom of the page.
Right, that's what I meant. There was the original DVD, which contained the original home video edit. Then there was the Special Edition, which added the flashes, and which was released in the 2-disc set as well as a one-disc release. And then there was the Blu-ray, which goes back to the theatrical cut.

With all the different versions and releases, it's no wonder there's so much confusion about it. Is this the Trek movie that has the most variations?

But what about the box set collections? There were two, one with the movies 1-9 and one with the movies 1-10 ... they used the special 2-disc edition the first three or four movies and the single disc editions for the later ones. Did they use the same discs for those box sets? I had hoped that maybe they had re-pressed the discs, and this time used an anamorphic transfer.

Box sets like those are typically just repackaging of existing discs.

I don't know. TMP had the theatrical cut, the "special longer version" which is really the ABC television edit, and the director's edition. That at least matches TUC's three versions, and with far more dramatic changes. The only difference is that, to my knowledge, the "special longer version" has never been released on disc, only videotape.

This is the only set I see that has the extended The Undiscovered Country release. Amazon says to see the original individual release packaging for details.

I really don't think what you're wanting actually exists.

Not quite. The ABC cut was 4:3 tv aspect ratio and had a different take of the turbolift scene between Kirk and Saavik, replacing the single widescreen shot with back-and-forth individual shots. It's an alternate take with a different delivery.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was looking for R2 releases. One of the sets I mentioned is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00009W5F1

From the description:
However, only the first four movies are presented in their Special Edition versions--these have the same content as the feature discs of the separately released two-disc sets--and the Nemesis disc also contains a commentary, documentaries and deleted scenes. Movies V-IX are bare-bones releases, though, with no extra content to speak of.

Yes. Except that's TWOK and I was talking about TMP. :rommie:

The "special longer version" of TMP and the ABC television edit were both 4:3 pan-and-scan. It was never released in any widescreen format because the unfinished effects shot that shows Kirk exiting the Enterprise, and part of the stage rafters, looked bad in 4:3 but would have looked horrendous in widescreen.

There are a couple of minor differences, but they are very insignificant.

Not even the widescreen VHS? (I don't know much about the 'special longer version' of TMP.)
