STV on Syfy tonight

Its kind of cold and slow tonight so I decided I am going to watch a portion of STV...and then wash the taste of it out of my mouth with the ST09 DVD! :techman::rommie:

Insurrection was the worst movie. I remember watching it in theaters stoned and falling asleep. The villains were lame, the comedy was lame (Data as a flotation device???) and the plot was lame.

Did you just come from a meeting of the Non-Sequitur Society?

Fascinating. I wash the taste of Star Trek 9 out of my mouth with TFF.

Good luck with that:lol: STV got nominated for nothing but Razzies. ST09, for a Writer's Guild Award, 4 Oscars, a Hugo, and 5 Peoples Choice Awards. Someone recognizes the qualitative difference...

it was late i fell asleep :guffaw:

Needless to say the last thing I remember was the 2nd grade paper-mâché play scene of rocks coming through the earth (cause god is so powerful he can do that). So i am still left with the taste of horribleness in my mouth. I will have to make up for that...

Will it have better ratings than SGU? :guffaw:

25 year old reruns of Julia Childs episodes have higher ratings than SGU!

Yes because awards dictate what movie's I like.

I love ST:V

ST:V had the heart in it. The quest to find God in itself was an awesome story to tell. I'm a religious guy so maybe I am biased, I don't know.

I thought the guy who played Sybok was amazing! I loved every scene he was in. I loved how he wasn't really a bad guy, just a guy with a longing in his heart to find God. He went to some extremes to do it because otherwise he would have been considered a quack (he was already a Vulcan outcast). And I loved the fact that, when he realized he has been swindled, he sacrificed his own life to give the others a chance to escape alive.

Sure there were some horrid scenes (I always skip the Uhura fan dance), and sure the effects were sub par, and even sure, some of the humor was ill placed. But the heart of the characters was always there.

I see some people complain that the crew was so easily swindled by a con man. They forget that he used his telepathic powers to erase painful memories from their minds. We got a glimpse of this with Dr. McCoy. If someone had power to make me forget my most painful memories, I'd probably at least consider following such a person.

Also people forget that both Spock and McCoy rejected Sybok even AFTER their experience with him. Spock didn't even bat an eye! he stuck with his captain and friend. McCoy realized that he was part of the team, and although a bit reluctant, also decided to reject Sybok. Scotty didn't even care, he HAD to fix the transporters because he promised his captain to do it.

The whole movie was so upbeat, and was trying to reach so high story wise, that I can't help but forgive it's shortcomings! It's my favorite Trek film tied with TUC (which I like for different reasons).

As for ST:9, totally different story. The movie completely lost me when the Ba'ku basically pulled an arrogant asshole moment. "Your android's positronic matrix is fucked! Oh, you thought we didn't know about technology like that? We are just as technologically advanced as you, probably more than you, but we gave it all up to live a simple peaceful life......" Dear God I wanted to barf. If I were Picard, I would have said "fuck this them, guys load our shit back up to the Enterprise! these guys don't need our help!".

But noooo!!! Picard was mesmerized by the promise of vagina (which he never got), and about siding with a specific group, instead of reaching for a diplomatic solution like TV Series Picard would have tried.

Everything else just fell apart after that. Flotation device? Running away for 2/3's of the movie? A Gravis Joystick to control the Enterprise? Using a phaser rifle as a club to hit those flying drones? Worst of all, having it break in pieces? What's it made out of? Paper Mache? You guys ever try to break an actual rifle? You'd have to smack it like 20 times on a concrete floor just to even scratch the finish!!

Then we have boob jokes, Worf with a pimple, Data repeating the boob joke to Worf? Dear God who wrote this shit?

So you started the thread with the sole intention of slamming Star Trek V: The Final Frontier?

As of June 1989, STV could have been classified as the worst Trek film. As of present day, Insurrection, Generations, and Nemesis are much worse than STV. At least STV had a cogent plot with a clearly defined villian. It also had heart and soul. I enjoy watching STV. Cobra

P.S... If one can watch a movie (at home) from start to finish at least twice, then it can't possibly the worst film they've ever seen. For example, the 'Bewitched' movie with Nicole Kidman was so campy and gut wrenching horrible that I couldn't watch more than a third of it. This is coming from a person who grew up watching Bewitched. Last example, the Bond film Quantum of Solace was a $230 million dollar piece of crap. I watched the whole thing and have been amazed that anyone can defend this poorly written/edited/ directed pile of excrement. :barf:Again, I have seen all Bond films and can watch most of them pleasurably. I can still watch the last three Brosnan ones if I have no other choice. This last Bond film I will never watch again. Cobra

And then claiming ST9 was better LMAO

This begs for a test of moderator reaction...

I know it's all a matter of opinion, but the original poster hasn't really commented on why he hates ST:V and why he loves ST:9.

Both movies had the same writing issues (lame jokes, cringe worthy scenes (Uhura fan dance? Data asking Worf if his boobs looked perkier?)

Both movies had the same production issues (horrible FX, unimpressive scenes, basically all due to lack of money).

What in my mind saves ST:V is how high they are trying to reach story wise. It's like a B movie with an A type story. The search for God, whatever he/it may be, touches us all. The way the trio are dealt with is oozing pure TOS'ness. I think it's the only movie that actually touched on the lives of the crew. I always enjoy watching Kirk/Spock/McCoy have a camping night. I enjoy watching Sulu and Chekov actually be friends. There's tons of little scenes like that in the movie.

ST:9 wasn't reaching at all. There is no grand theme. It's basically a bunch of aliens with ONE Federation admiral here to take some people away that BY THEIR OWN DECLARATION were capable of defending themselves, but unwilling to do it. Did at any point in the story, show that they asked for help? Picard and crew decided this on their own. If those aliens wanted the fountain of youth, why not let them live on the other side of the planet? Where they could write up a treaty to mutually stay away?

Oh, and the mind blowing realization at the end that they are.......family!! Oh so they are biologically related are they? And they were about to resort to murder of their parents, but all is forgiven at the end.

Yuck!! Again I say, which drunk writer came up with this bullshit?

Well we all have our opinions, but you can also consult the critical reaction...to me it does stand out that ST09 got a Writer's Guild Award nom, the first ST movie to do so. Writing is always the key. STV's story is the key to it's disastrous execution.

Well the night started off with me noting that the mediocre 1979 version of STTMP and the horrible STV were both on Syfy in the same night (some programmer's idea of a joke?). If you really think about, what other movies with such poor quality are shown in primetime to carry a network? I guess that counts for something!
