I loved Rose, didn't care for Martha - though the actor was quite good in a thankless part - and couldn't be rid of Donna quickly enough. Amy and Rory are adorable - Amy's easily the best companion since Rose, and is often out ahead of the Doctor.

Well... it's sorta TRUE. They AREN'T making it just for the nerds. There aren't enough nerds to make a 160-200 million dollar movie THAT successful. If there were Scott Pilgrim woulda gone through the roof.
Nerds/Fanatics/Whathaveyou make up a smaller percentage of an audience than they would like to think. Just because they are vocal, doesn't mean there are a lot of them.

I just think its funny how much animosity comes through in a lot of these articles with studio heads/producers/creators. Like I was reading a description for Alphas in EW the other day & the producer/writer/whoever just has to point out that anyone can like this show b/c we have no one flying or wearing tights or icky nerdy stuff like that. It also comes out in just about any article with SyFy honchos these days. also is it really necessary to point out that SDCC con attendees that are scrutinizing(& possibly might pan)their films also wear funny anime & ewok costumes & act like evangelists? Yeah there are some crazies, but most nerds are just normal people who just want quality entertainment.
Yes, because the point was that public enthusiasm on the part of folks like this is thought to sometimes backfire because people don't identify with them. These folks show up on YouTube or Entertainment Tonight type broadcasts from SDCC and it's "Oh, it's a movie that those kind of people like."

If Lost had been advertised as a Sci-Fi show... I don't think as many people would have INITIALLY tuned it.
So, it's not about animosity, it's about getting butts in the seats. Nerds and geeks are welcome, but, they don't want the general audience to be turned off. Or at least that's the concern.
And that's true. It's the crazies that ruin it for us all. I blame Twilight.

People blame that franchise for a lot of things, but accusing it of being the reason nerds are thought of as alienating and socially awkward is... new, if not retroactive.
I mean I pretty much remember this dynamic back before Twilight was Twilight, you know, you may just be giving that book/film saga a little too much credit.

ok but why is creating your own costumes & dressing up with freinds to celebrate your common interests seen by so many as weird? Ive never cosplayed at a con but to me it seems like just having fun.

Who knows? It doesn't matter; it's the way that it is.
It's not the cos play. I think that's a great part. It's the ZEALOUSNESS of a certain kind of fan that's off putting. It take 1 out of 10 crazy fan dressed up as their favorite character, to make the other 9 look bad.

Seems like ComicCon would be cheap marketing. I can see why it's not the top of the list, but there's no call to snub it.
Professional marketers probably just find it somewhat embarrassing. They'd rather do higher-toned programs, such as TV ad buys. Remember, people who go into marketing aren't necessarily fans of what they are selling, and aren't going to be jazzed about rubbing elbows with a passel of nerds. If I were working in, say, sports, I'd probably be just as annoyed at the prospect of having to deal with some dumb sports fan related thing.

I've worked with people who found it embarrassing and were relieved not to be sent there. Some people even find E3 kind of off-putting, even though it's far more professional and dignified. By contrast, nobody is ever embarrassed to go to CES. I guess technology nerds are always cool.
Basically, any show that is open to the (ugh) public is looked upon with deep suspicion. The worthwhile trade shows are the ones where you spend all your time negotiating with buyers and everyone is wearing a suit.
It may be strange that people would voluntarily work in, say, computer/console games business who find it somewhat embarrassing and beneath them, and don't want to be reminded that there's a fun and zany aspect to it all, but after all, a paycheck's a paycheck and a lot of people have jobs they hate.
They don't. They manage presentations then go to dinner, a bar and back to the hotel or airport. Talent sucks up to the fanboisie; marketing and management handle logistics.
