Isn't there like entire seasons of Dr Who that are lost forever because of a fire before the VHS age?
Not a fire, but deliberate junking before the days of widespread reruns and VHS. Not entire seasons, no, but entire serials (the '63-'89 show being comprised mostly of serials made up of several 25-minute parts). More info
here.
I too would like to get more exposure to the old Dr Who. I'm basing my judgment of 'Campy' totally on the new ones. Do the older ones balance the silliness a bit more?
Well, we're talking about 26 straight seasons of TV. The show kept itself fresh for its first 15 years or so by subtly reinventing itself every few years with a new production team (and has re-started this practice more recently with the change from Russell T Davies to Steven Moffat; part of the reason it died for so long was that it stopped doing this and stagnated). The original run can be safely divided into several distinctly different eras, each varying in tone and approach; some are fairly serious, others not so much. Sometimes it varies within a single season.
When you say "the new ones," (hard to believe they alone are 8 years old now) do you mean the RTD or Moffat era? I'd argue that both do "balance" the seriousness, the latter more so, though some of the camp of RTD's stuff was
very camp!
Never saw much of the new Who, just enough to know it wasn't my cup of tea.
Again, if you made that decision early on in the revival, I'd recommend giving it another try as it's changed hands since then.
Serious question to the OP (and I don't mean this to come across as bluntly as it may seem); what validation do you get by encouraging a win for your favourite show in a vote whose outcome is virtually meaningless? DW and TNG are two of my favourite shows ever and I love both for different reasons. Isn't that enough?
