Strategic Error by Sisko on Waltz

Toward the end of Waltz, Sisko knocks Dukat down, but he didn't grab his phaser, I think had he gotten the phaser, the situation would have played out much differently, and Dukat would've ended up on that planet...or being Star Fleet, he would of been taken into custody.

I know I know...you had to have an "out" in the episode. Still, I think it could have been done differently...

Thoughts?

Well, Sisko was beaten up pretty badly at that point. While he could have exciting dialogue with Dukat, he might have lacked the clarity of mind for grabbing the phaser.

However, I'd rather like to think that the cave was simply too dark for Sisko to spot the phaser...

His real strategic mistake here wouldn't be ignoring the phaser - it would be not hitting Dukat in the head with that metal bar a few dozen times more after the villain went down. Sisko probably though the Cardassian was down for good, though. It's not as if he had much experience fighting these people hand-to-hand. Kira or O'Brien might have known better!

I don't think it would've changed anything if he'd taken the phaser. Dukat jumped him by surprise on the shuttle, Sisko wouldn't have had the chance to fire. True, Dukat wouldn't have had the phaser on him after the struggle, but Sisko was hurt, Dukat would've gotten the phaser easily.

The only way this would've changed is if Sisko had taken the phaser and shot Dukat while he was unconscious, ensuring he'd be unconscious for longer and allowing Sisko to escape the planet. Sisko and most starfleet officers would have a problem shooting an unarmed person and add to that Dukat was already unconscious, it just wouldn't happen.

Yes, indeed, trying to argue with a mad man and, of course, underestimating Cardassian sturdiness was a bad move. The moment Sisko realized that Dukat was hearing voices, he should have stopped teasing him and should have thought of an option to incapacitate him or kill him. He should have hidden that fork with a missing tine better and should not have fanned Dukat’s madness.

But it is very easy to say that when you are a viewer. In reality, people act on the spur of the moment and don’t have time to deliberate their moves, very often the emotions and instincts prevail and they do not choose the best course of action.

I do agree that Sisko was in a pretty bad shape after he managed to knock Dukat down. He just departed for the escape pod, probably his instinctive desire to run away displaced the objective of securing his departure. He did not hit Dukat on the head but on the back so one blow on the back, considering that Dukat was wearing body armor, would hardly have been enough to keep him unconscious for a long time or kill him.

Dukat leaving Sisko alive also did not make sense but could be ascribed to his delusion and his fixation on Sisko. Both sides made mistakes, when you have an opportunity to finish your enemy, just do it, don’t talk. But movie combats are not supposed to be realistic.
