Great interview with the Duffers and confirms what i've been saying - the alternate ending for El was put in place for people to have the option to decide for themselves which they prefer, nothing more and nothing less.
It also doesn't explain Kali's final scene(s). She was clearly using her powers at the end. I think the Duffer's had originally planned the Iceland ending, and then thought like Mike's dialogue said, that it was too nice--then omitted it to include the choose your own ending scene.Yeah but if El died that makes one whooping plothole with the sonic weapons at the end and why multiple ones didn't effect here when its shown even 1 dan cripple her.
I'm already making a 'genuine' post. Do I really need to add a comment? I don't think so.@oktay - please make more of an effort to post actual content with your posts, instead of material posted by other people
I mean I get the idea of leaving it to the viewers to decide. But if you are going to do that you wont leave big evidence that supports one side of the argument. El simply shouldn't of been able to even stand upright in the wormholes mouth let alone use her powers to talk to mike. Impossible. It also doesn't explain Kali's final scene(s). EDIT: And the Duffer's play coyly in that interview. All they say is that Jane/El had to leave Hawkins at the end of the story for the rest of the group to live their lives and the story to end. They never say which ending was true. Furthermore, I think they imply that the way the show ended was done in the editing room after the filming was done and the actors themselves didn't really know how it was going to end up. (EDIT 2: I skimmed the article so if I'm missing some specific "smoking gun" quote then feel free to correct me.)

Does anyone on here by the way buy the El being dead?
I think 8 is dead. She was in the Wormhole and projecting El image though from a distance out of the range of the sonic weapons.I don't. The story just wasn't written or portrayed that way on screen. Mike pointed out all the evidence why the sisters are still alive, and it was shown that way in the episode. It wasn't some kind of alternative version to what we'd seen. I think the ending was an attempt to make the "real" ending ambiguous. In that article, it reads to me like the Duffers also agree with El still being alive.
I learned from the comments under the tweet that this is true. Netflix should share this game video recording a bit sooner. Actually, they'll be holding an announcement event on social media on January 7th about this year's upcoming content; they could announce it there.

So they basically embraced the concept of Head Canon. El is live or dead, depending on what you want to believe.
While I still choose to believe the version of events where she makes it, I think there's enough doubt to make either possibility viable.I mean I get the idea of leaving it to the viewers to decide. i wonder if it will be based in the mid 90s or the 2000s

One thing I cant prove but suspect is that Hopper was in on it. Only reason El didn't tell mike the full truth is he would have been dumb enough to try and follow her ruining the plan as everyone of them would of been under surveillance from the US government. Hopper though would of known the stakes and could of been trusted.
Exactly.
And i find it interesting how some are arguing here for a definitive ending because of the sonic projectors and such, busting out detective skills but for me missing the point of it all, i.e. the given choice to everybody which end they believe. They believe El lives because she was able to be in the presence of the projectors while being unaffected, i choose to believe she's dead for character purposes.
The cool thing about fiction is that you can hold two "realities" at the same time. You don't actually have to answer in your head one way or the other. It's fun to debate though. Having gone through the ending again, I can see the hints that El has already made her decision prior to the group exiting the Upside Down so she probably somehow disembarked before the even passed through the gates.
@Neroon is a Mod.So it's more than a suggestion.I'm already making a 'genuine' post. Do I really need to add a comment? I don't think so.
Not at all a surprise. Here's the full quote from Ross:
I would watch the hell out of that.Regardless--I still want a Nancy Wheeler, P.I. show.
Which is what they've been saying for at least a year and yet people keep going with ideas involving the Hawkins characters. In other words, a completely unrelated show they say just happens to be in the same universe… possibly?
They already said they're involved with the development of the show but they're not showrunning it, but it will be on Netflix just as is the animated show. The spin-off is on Netflix right? The Duffer brothers I believe have since moved onto Paramount with a deal to produce content for them. So that may be why they wouldn't be showrunners if it is tied into Netflix.
Glad to see my guess was correct.
When I first read the news in the post above, I thought it would be a completely unrelated show, but now I'm confused.

Agreed completely. I always love when fiction, whether it's television, cinema, or novel, leaves open-ended questions about characters facts and its up to readers and viewers to decide on the answer that best satisfies them.I think she already has made her final decision way back when she last talked to Hopper, likely before that after Kali explained the situation and her plan.
I like this discussion about the chances of either scenario and i think this is exactly what the Duffers wanted post show. It's up to each one of us based on personality and desires to believe one version or the other. Some need their happy end ( as happy as it can be that her friends are in pain and grieving her "death" while she herself can never return or make contact), some accept her death as necessary to break the cycle, one last heroic act.
It's as Hopper said to Mike at the end - acceptance is key and the last step of the grieving process they all went through before picking up their lives again.
They will never forget her, they will always love her no matter which end is actually true and to me that's the most important part.
