Spoilers Stranger Things - Season 5

Loved the way Max showed up very unexpected. Holly's dreamland outfit was some crazy story book fashion. I'm glad she took a fire poker instead of a basket. And speaking of fashions, those poor 80's kids. I don't recall the fashions being that hideous,

i also have this another theory

i think enzo in season 5 part 1 but he is off screen to get all the supplys for and or with murry to bring to hawkings and give them to hopper and joyce johnathan steve robin and nancy eleven lucas dustin mike and william

since enzo was a smuggler in season 4 and does knows about smuggling stuff from one place to another place

I saw a review mention they were going for an Alice in Wonderland look with Holly and her memory world. It makes a little sense.

And that has no effect on us, so we don't deserve to have a say in whether or not they can say it. If they want to say something controversial, that's entirely up to them, and it's up to them to deal with the consequences.
Because it might cause unnecessary backlash is easily one of the absolute worst reasons to limit free speech, because literally anything that anyone says could cause "unnecessary backlash". Hell I could say something as innocent as yellow is my favorite color, and if enough people who hate yellow saw it, that could cause "unnecessary backlash".
The problem is, you start limiting what people can say about a big controversy, then that just makes it easier to limit what people can say about less controversial topics, and then before you know it no one can say anything about anything.
I'm more than happy to let other people say things I don't like or don't agree with, if it means I can also continue to express my own opinions that other people might not like or agree with.
And we're getting way off topic so this is the last thing I'm saying on this topic, and don't bother trying to private message me about this, because I won't respond.

And that is, as they say, that.

I hope one of the mods sees what is happening here because this entire topic about Stranger Things and we're now getting very close to neutral zone topics.

As for spoilers, one of the worst rated episodes of this series has finally come to have some importance in the story.
I always knew it would resurface this way. I never bought for a second they'd written that off completely, despite the public outcry. I just kept yelling in the back of my head "But there's another one out there!" LOL
  • There's way too much exposition for my liking. Lots of scenes where characters seem to get a "hunch" about something, and/or explain things back and forth to one another. All of this feels like it's for the convenience of viewers who are slow on the uptake, as if they started with the expectation that everyone would be watching on a second screen while doing their laundry and not pay attention to nuance.
I agree they've shoehorned in quite a lot of exposition & contrivance, but IMHO the show's always had contrivances like that. It's honestly not a perfectly written show. Never has been. It's even somewhat pedestrian at times. However, it IS still a really good show regardless. It ought to be for $480 million, for 8 episodes of tv show.

These kind of contrivances are becoming very standard in modern content anyhow. For a myriad of reasons, no one trusts the intelligence, recall, or imagination of there audience anymore, & one can hardly blame them, in modern times lol, but I sure do miss the days when we (especially US) were given credit for having thinking minds of our own.

But it still looks & sounds fantastic, & they've got quite a number of excellent cast members to make up for the shortcomings imho. (Schnapp has always impressed me) & even the ones who aren't as good aren't mucking things up much, this round. Experience has been helpful there, I think. Plus, they drew Frank Darabont out of retirement, for god's sake. C'mon.
Was thinking the same. He is trying to create lieutenants.
Maybe, but I'm not entirely sure about that, OR if it's him needing to draw mental power from others, to overpower Jane, who vanquished him to begin with, & because of that, she might now need to rely on Kali & Will to combat his increased power, from syphoning brain power off these kids. Hopefully Max & Holly, in there, are also a factor in at least partially dismantling what he's amassing, in some way (like maybe that mega-wall housing them)

All in all, it's been enjoyable. I'm pleased with the direction for Will Byers. I was on the fence as to whether he'd go one way or the other, & this is by far preferable... so far. It's rather in line with the basic nostalgia factor of the show, instead of modern tendencies to do the opposite, & go dark with their heros, for artificially inflated conflict, before redeeming them. They still could do that. I'm hoping they don't.

I kind of suspected, in a way, that we'd be where we are with Max also, and I'm here for that too. I'm fond that Murray & others can still bring in some comedy. Heck, even Breaking Bad had to sacrifice that by the end. I didn't see the Holly (& other kid stuff) coming & it's been interesting. I probably should've seen it coming, what with some of the other kids he'd possessed.

There's probably some more interesting twists coming too, (Still wondering where Paul Reiser will surface) & there's likely also a tragedy or two pending. My money is on Steve now, with how the character dynamics are shaking out, & that he'd been intended as a short-lived character to begin with. If you want tears, you can find them there. He's got good friends now, & he's had a terrific journey from D-bag to unlikely hero. It'd gut millions.

I will say that I'm a bit concerned for Netflix after this though. They've got nothing of this caliber popularity after this, and it might signal the beginning of a major slump in continued memberships. Even Apple TV has better looking stuff now. I bet that the huge wait for this alone has had people frustrated enough to want to dump them. Their flagship is passing into history very soon

But while what they're doing makes sense to a certain extent, what pisses me off is that people are forcing them to do it.
I said this for those who tried to boycott the show.

I hope one of the mods sees what is happening here because this entire topic about Stranger Things and we're now getting very close to neutral zone topics.
Anyway, I better close the topic.

Dan Murell's take on the season so far really closely mirrors mine.

I got Alice/Dorothy Gale/Red Riding Hood vibes from the ensemble. And she was headed into the wood. ;) Also a touch of Holly Marshall from "Land of the Lost", but that's probably due to the character's name and the actress's appearance.

Before I jump into the stuff you guys have posted about, a couple questions I wanted to put out there (which might relate to what was posted... don't have time just yet to quote specific posts):

1. isn't the entire community of Hawkins under quarantine? We know the base has EXTRA barriers, but the town itself, isn't it technically isolated from the rest of the country, at least on some level? So I would imagine things like truancy and such might have some extra laxity, since it's not like education officials form the state or anything are going to come in at deal with administration. It's just that the town is doing its best to live a "normal" life

2. They have been in isolation for over a year now, right? So at least with Dustin , even though it seems strange to some viewers how he's gotten isolated.... the Heavy Spoilers Youtube channel put out this thought that made me think -- Dustin has been getting bullied all year by those who still think Eddie was the cause of the problem. If I remember correctly, just about everyone else, including "our gang" have seen Eddie as a weirdo, and kind of a jerk and selfish at times. Only Dustin has REALLY seen Eddie at his finest and self-sacrificial..... so he takes defense of Eddie's legacy super seriously -- much more than anyone else who at least knew the "real" Eddie. And I assume Dustin has been unable to communicate with his girlfriend and/or broke up with her? So he's feel extra-isolated. But I am sure will be resolved soon

3. So right now, we have at least 3 "superpowered" young people at play: 11, Will and Kali/8. And there seem to be some potential new ones: Max, Holly, possibly even the other kids that were taken? Wondering if there's gonna be some kinda of "superteam" that will factor into the finale (with maybe a reference to Battle of the Planets or Super friends?)

4. Anyone else worried that the fake out of Hopper with a bomb strapped to him has "Glenn" vibes from Walking Dead -- where we thought he was gonna die, but was a "fake out", but that the "real thing" will happen later...possibly at a time when we thought he was sfe, but isn't.?

5. Lastly....maybe I wans't paying attention, but I didn't get as many nostalgic vibes as I did the previous seasons.. For example, Joyce in the first season, used a yellow long corded wall phone that I had growing up. Then when she moved to California, she had a cordless phone that for our household, was a big deal as it was new technology. (Being able to talk OUTSIDE my front door!). Haven't noticed anything like that so far.

I'm not convinced Will is super-powered like Henry, Kali & Jane, & neither is Holly, Max, or any of the kids. Will seems to me to be benefitting from his link TO Vecna (like the link he's establishing to the other kids) and as such he has access to use Vecna's powers.

The other kids he's linked to might be able to do similarly, IF they escaped like Will did. Max & Holly seem to have slipped into some recess of Vecna's mind, which might be useful in dismantling his control over the other kids, or disrupting his powers in some way, that he's using in the upside-down, but it's still through their connection to Vecna's mind, which he established

Just my theory though

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing with Will, I'm pretty sure he can only effect things that are part of the hive mind, and doesn't powers on the caliber of El or Kali.

I stumbled across an old Tiffany music video while on Youtube yesterday, and yeah the '80s fashions really were that bad.

Yeah, I don't think he's giving them powers like El and Kali, I think he's using them to build or power something.

The budget for this season is between $400 and $480 million. This is a staggering amount of money for a television series.

It is however not a staggering amount for what is essentially 4 feature length sci-fi/fantasy movies. It's like $100-$120 million per each 2 hours. There's been a ton of FX heavy stuff in this season. They've reacquired a rather hefty amount of cast (which is usually what kills shows in later seasons) & it's a huge IP right now, produced by celebrated creators. This thing started big & has only ballooned grossly since

Easily over $100 million was paid out around the cast

I hadn't noticed before just how much Maya Hawke looks like her mom. It stood out to me this time because I had just watched the new trailer for Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, so her mom was still fairly fresh in my mind.
I find it a little funny that Linda Hamilton has gone from playing one of the all time greatest female action movie heroes, to now playing villain. Her last couple characters are the kind of people you'd expect to see someone like Sarah Connor fighting against.

So right now, we have at least 3 "superpowered" young people at play: 11, Will and Kali/8.

My understanding is that Will does not have "powers" in the same way that Jane and Kali do; Will has just learned to channel Henry's powers--and he's only able to do that because Henry possessed him back in Season 2. As for Max, I'm not sure what powers she is supposed to have.

EDIT: And I see that several people pointed this out already. Sorry for the redundancy.

I actually think, despite the purportedly high budget, a lot of this season looks worse than earlier. You can tell they have moved to The Volume - and not only in the Upside Down, but also in scenes where it wasn't really needed, like the top of the communications tower with Jonathan and Steve.

Also, while it would piss everyone off, an ending where it's discovered that somehow, Will has been stuck in an illusion woven by Vecna since Season 1 (and he never really escaped) is completely aligned with the story this season.
