Spoilers Stranger Things - Season 4

Absolutely. I really do think Amazon and Disney are smarter in dropping things weekly, often a show is over before you can really process it, rather than something special to savour it's just content to be consumed as quickly as possible before you move onto the next thing.
Exactly. And its taken away the "watercooler" opportunity to discuss episodes as they came out and speculate as to where things were headed.

Netflix are already flirting with changing their model. Splitting up this season is part of it, but they've also been releasing some stuff weekly rather than dropping it all at once, such as some of their K-dramas. That, and they're looking into now including a cheaper, ad-supported plan after their prices have gotten absurdly high.

I would think Jonathan’s a little more in danger just because he’s one of the least compelling core characters. Just like the less compelling Lost characters had the higher death rate.

I’d also worry about El because losing her would be the worst case scenario at this point and it’s implied that the Upside Down was created from her mind and her death may be a requirement of ending it. Like, El may need to sacrifice herself to defeat 001.

Out of the core four I think Will is in the most danger. Just cause he’s got an obvious tragedy and is also the least compelling of the group.

Crazy thought, but does anyone suppose this is going to be a "Walt from Lost" or "Carl from Walking Dead" situation where the decision is to axe the kid who's aging too "rapidly," compared to the part/other kid cast members?

If so, Mike Wheeler is the likely victim, given Finn Wolfard looks older and older than his nineteen years (though Charlie Heaton is really starting to look like a guy approaching thirty as well).

Just out today is this excellent interview with Variety where, among many topics, the Duffer Brothers talk about the hows and whys the episodes were longer and the split season. Contrary to what has been discussed in this thread, the split occurred because of the needs of the season and how the Duffer Brothers were still working on the final two episodes and wanted to get the rest of the season out because it's been so long since season 3:

They also said we'll get some more answers about Vecna and the Mind-Flayer, but less so about the Upside Down lore (that's being saved for season 5).

Also of note:

If Steve dies (which he might!), it won't be because of the bats.

We will see Will's painting in volume 2 and there were many drafts of it before they settled on the final version.

The fact the Upside Down is frozen to the day Will disappeared is a big part of season 5 and they almost didn't include that reveal this season.

Apparently they've been "George Lucasing" certain stuff, including on opening weekend of season 4. It's small stuff that you really have to look for but includes making sure certain dates are correct (because apparently it hadn't been consistent until a superfan sent them a document of all of instances of it being wrong).

Regarding the spin-off, they said they haven't really worked on it yet but probably will as things wind down in season 5. Particularly of note is how they looked at it and asked themselves whether they would want to do it if wasn't a Stranger Things-related story and decided the answer is yes, they would. They also went onto praise Finn Wolfhard's creative mind because of how he was able to come up with the same idea independently and how he's working on his own projects as a director.

I would think Jonathan’s a little more in danger just because he’s one of the least compelling core characters.

Jonathan would seem to be the predictable choice, as he's lost any prominence in the storylines, yet the Duffers might be aware of that and will shake things up by not killing him.

I’d also worry about El because losing her would be the worst case scenario at this point and it’s implied that the Upside Down was created from her mind and her death may be a requirement of ending it. Like, El may need to sacrifice herself to defeat 001.

Killing Eleven would be a bold move, capping off her journey and effect on Hawkins by having her end all threats--but she had to go with it. I seriously doubt the Duffers would kill Eleven off.

Every scene with Will and Mike (and the painting) made me think we're going to learn that Will is in love with Mike. Anyone else?
I think that's pretty clear at this point and the Duffer Brothers said they will address his sexuality (I think that Variety interview said in Volume 2 but I can't remember for certain).

Sadie Sink and director Shawn Levy breakdown the creation of That Scene. Pretty incredible how much of it is practical effects!

100%. I've seen people question this and it boggles my mind because it couldn't be more obvious what's going on. At least from the outside; I get why Mike is clueless.
Respect to the Duffers for playing the long game with this, as it's something that was hinted at way back in season one.
I'm assuming that Will will end up talking about his orientation and feelings with Robin. Maybe the conversation and mentoring on her part will give her the confidence to come out and hook up with her band mate.
I had a similar thought, though it would require some shuffling of characters since I don't recall those two ever interacting last season and they're both quite a ways away from either of their plotlines converging.
I got the feeling that Will's painting is meant for Mike.
I'll do you one better than that; I'm reasonably sure it's not just for Mike, it's of Mike, or at least Mike as his Paladin D&D character.
I just thought Stranger Things was finally going to explain how that painting got there at the end of Ghostbusters 2

That or the prop master put it there. One or the other. ;)

Maybe I've been watching too much Corridor Crew, but that set-up is about what I expected in terms of what is practical. As a rule, it's best to do as much practical as possible, especially if an actor has to exist and interact in that space. The job of VFX there should be to enhance more than to create. Even with all the best acting in the world, you'll always get a better, more visceral performance from an actor if they have something real to play off of. (indeed, corridor crew recently covered this in an Adam Savage colab of all things.) Also; fluid displacement and surface tension adhesion is a nightmare to simulate and render, so I knew the gunk and splashes had to have been done in-camera.

Very very minor note; but the only thing I'd wished they'd done a little different is for the scene where she's running and dodging, to actually be firing tennis or nerf balls or something into her path to give her something to actually avoid, and and another physical element for the splashes for the VFX to come in later and enhance.

Took a few decades, but I'm glad effects are finally swinging back to the idea that not every element needs to be (or even should be) CGI. For a while there it felt like only George Lucas and Guillermo del Toro had a handle on the concept.

The Duffer brothers have said that they have altered previous seasons on Netflix--I am assuming background details and effects are most likely. They apparently have already altered parts of Season 4 Vol 1. They call it "George Lucasing".
