Strange New Worlds renewed for a fourth season

Very happy about the 4th season, though it was a no-brainer for Paramount to renew it. Hopefully it will go 10+ seasons. It's now the flagship Star Trek show.

Cancelation of Lower Decks doesn't sadden me. I was not a big fan of Star Trek cartoons, they were a mild diversion between new seasons of live action shows. So I won't miss them much.

I don't see that Disco and LDS finishing after five seasons means that SNW will too.

Disco was divisive and had been overhauled several times, while LDS has sub-niche appeal (people who are familiar enough with Trek to get the references which it so heavily relies upon, yet not so precious as to take its style as an insult).

SNW has broader appeal, and did solidly in the Nielsen ratings last season. If it keeps that up in the coming years, and the key players (particularly Mount) are willing to go on, it could possibly go longer.

Good news and bad news today. I'm happy SNW is getting a fourth season, but I bet fifth season will be the last. Seems to be the new normal in streaming era

I'm sorry to say that I agree with this. The best we can hope for a series now is 5 seasons, and with 10 episodes each season, VOY becomes the last series to hit 100 episodes. (ENT missed it by only 2 episodes. Damn it!)

It's just been announced Lower Decks is also ending with its fifth season.

I am truly saddened by this. And an even further indicator that 5 seasons is the best we can hope for in the current era. (DISCO being cancelled after 5, LOWER DECKS not getting a renewal past season 5.)

Honestly, I won't be surprised if SNW does end with five seasons. As I noted in plenty of speculation threads that Disco would end with five seasons (well before that was made official) it's pretty common for shows these days to voluntarily end after five seasons.

Indeed, looking over things, you'd be hard pressed to find any streaming show that goes past five seasons. The closest is The Expanse, but even that at six seasons had its run split between three cable seasons and three streaming seasons. You're definitely not going to see a streaming show run for a decade or more like the Law and Orders, NCISs, Chicago shows or Grey's Anatomy.

It's cheaper to produce a new show than it is to indefinitely renew an existing one.

Here's Trekmovies take on the announcement:

And as for the possibility of a season 5 renewal and beyond I would hope we at least get a season 5 of SNW, and would love a season 6.

And remember that because the first three seasons of Star Trek Discovery were co-produced by Paramount and Netflix, Discovery will end its run with a total of 65 episodes, so who knows?

If Paramount+ fells a popular series should have about 60 to 70 episodes, we could get seven seasons of Star Trek Strange New Worlds..

But yeah right now I'm happy with the fact that we are definitely going to at least get four seasons of this wonderful Star Trek series.

Probably not. It gets more expensive as seasons go on.

I have hope that given Strange New Worlds' success, it could go a little longer than five seasons, but, there's absolutely no guarantee of that. As everyone has continued to point out, shows get more expensive as they go on and there's no doubt that Paramount will pull the plug the moment they aren't turning as large a profit. And assuming the company shows interest in continuing the brand, that's why they create a newer "cheaper" show.

That's exactly why Voyager was created after The Next Generation concluded.
