Straight to graphic novel?

Have there ever been any ST stories that have gone straight to graphic novel, without the intervening step of monthly comics? If so, what titles and publisher(s)? Are any or all of them available on the comics DVD (which I do own)?

William Shatner's first Kirk book "Ashes of Eden" was given a graphic novel release. Not sure if that fits your criteria. I don't think there have been many. I'd actually love to see more Trek Lit being adapted into graphic novel format. The Titan books in particular are perfect for this medium I think.

Chris Claremont did an original graphic novel (I think for DC) called (I think) Debt of Honor.

I would love to see a Titan comic, ether an original story or an adaptation. Andy Mangels has posted on here several times that he pitched a Titan comic (co-written by Time Russ) to IDW, but they passed on it.

Yep.

"Graphic novel" is a tricky term. Some people apply it to a single-volume long story, others to trade omnibuses of monthly story arcs.

Omitting some single-issue specials, which resemble regular, or slightly thicker-than-"normal" comics, there have been a few hardcover (and perfect bound trade paperback one-offs) that are "graphic novels" not made up of monthly segments.

eg. DC's "Debt of Honor" and "The Ashes of Eden" adaptation, and WildStorm's "TNG: The Gorn Crisis", "TNG: Forgiveness" and the perfect bound, slim "TOS: All of Me", "TOS: Enter the Wolves", "TNG: Embrace the Wolf" and "NF: Double Time". Also VOY titles "False Colors", "Elite Force" (computer game tie-in) and "Avalon Rising".

We were discussing IDW on another thread, if you look at their sales in both the Direct market and in books shops, I'll be amazed if we see many more Star Trek titles from IDW - they simply don't sell.

Yeah, I saw that discussion in the other thread. I just hope if they do stop, that someone else picks up the license, I would hate to see Trek comics stop all together.

If they do, it probably won't be for a while; the same lackluster sales that may lead to IDW dropping the license would cause others to steer clear too.

Does anyone know how the Star Trek 2009 movie adaptation sold? I always thought they may have been able to do a bit more business if they'd been allowed to tell stories in the Abramsverse beyond just the Nero mini-series.

Short story: poorly.

Long story: here are the per-issue averages for IDW's 2010 miniseries:

5,916: The Next Generation: Ghosts
5,794: Deep Space Nine: Fool's Gold
5,938: Captain's Log
5,409: Movie Adaptation
6,795: Leonard McCoy, Frontier Doctor
5,909: Burden of Knowledge

As you can see, it even underperformed the abysmally performing tNG and DS9 titles. Hell, it's even outsold by the Wrath of Khan adaptation, which many observers derided as pointless and 25 years too late, yet sold 8,965 copies of each issue. In fact, it's the worst-selling miniseries that IDW has ever done. And issue #4 is the only IDW comic to sell fewer than 5,000 copies in its month of release.

The new movie's comic luster wore off quickly; both Spock: Reflections and Nero sold over 10,000 copies of their first issues, and just over 7,000 of their last.

And I can't give you bookscan data for the collections because they sold >3,330 which is what the 751th title sold.

I think people were looking for adventures with the new (old) Enterprise crew in the Abramsverse, at least I was.
