Stories similar to Star Trek XI (v. minor spoilers only)

No spoilers please!

The new (and hopefully improved) Star Trek is only 3 weeks away. It’s got me thinking about which novels cover similar ground to the forthcoming Saviour of Star Trek/Last Nail in Trek’s Coffin (delete as applicable mid-March ;-)

So here’s a list of all the alternate versions of events and similar situations that i could think of. No major spoilers – all my film info is from the first few trailers.

Enterprise: The First Adventure
Kirk first assumes command of the Enterprise (meeting his crew for the first time) and ferries a weird space carnival around. Bizarre aliens are met. Klingons arrive. Spock does his first insane mindmeld with an alien, sending him nuts for a while. With vague references to some heroic and violent event that won Kirk his captaincy.

Final Frontier
Captain April and George Kirk launch the as-yet-unnamed Enterprise (built in space this time) on her first mission to rescue a colony ship caught in an ion storm. They somehow end up deep in Romulan space and an ethical dilemma. Mysterious hint at the end regarding George Kirk’s ultimate fate.

Best Destiny
In ‘Best Destiny’, young (*adopts squeaky prepubescent voice from ST trailer*) “My name is James Tiberius Kirk!” starts off running away from home (taking all his friends with him) and ends up fighting space pirates with his dad (see another thread for more on various versions of George Kirk) and Captain April.

Starfleet Academy: Cadet Kirk
A kiddie mini-novel where space cadet Kirk first meets Spock and McCoy, and has to shuttle them somewhere. Space pirates attack!

Killing Time
Weird gay undertones aside, this has a very similar basic story to the new film (someone else brought this up recently too): Romulans go back in time and mess things up – but in this version Spock is the lonely Captain of the VSS ShiKahr and Kirk is a loser drug-addict ensign. Things get really freaky in the ships’ botanical gardens, at least in the first edition. Extremely strange (and unintentionally hilarious).

Going off-topic a bit, the fan film Star Trek: Of Gods and Men has a very similar time-changing story too (look out for the one-nacelled USS “Kaylynn” during a battle scene!)

Anything else? Comics? (for those of you in countries where that DVD is available. Grrr!)

Howard Weinstein wrote a story in the comics (I'm forgetting the issues at the moment) where the Romulans went back in time to mess with Klingon history, and ended up creating a universe where the Klingons and the Federation were allied in the 23rd-century. (Kor is the Klingon Ambassador to the Federation, Worf from Star Trek VI is the Enterprise's science officer.)

That was "Timecrime" in DC's second series, issues 53-57, Oct. '93 - Feb. '94.

Issue 73 of DC's second series, "Star-crossed Part 1," depicts Kirk and Carol Marcus at the Academy, and features a version of the Kobayashi Maru simulation which is basically the same one featured in Julia Ecklar's novel The Kobayashi Maru (which also belongs on this list, I suppose).

Another version of Kirk's time at the Academy is in Peter David's DC Annual #2 (second series), titled "Starfleet Academy" (surprisingly enough). Like the movie, it postulates that Uhura was a classmate of Kirk's.

And of course there's the My Brother's Keeper trilogy by Michael Jan Friedman, the first volume of which, Republic, depicts Kirk and Gary Mitchell at the Academy.
