Stop butchering Christmas Songs!

One of my biggest musical pet peeves around this time of year is when pop artists try to remake Christmas songs. Though they occasionally sound okay, half the time they end up completely ruining the song. This morning I was driving and heard an awful R&B/techno remix to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and it was just torture.

If get why you might want to sing Christmas songs, but you could at least try to sing them in a style similar to how they were written. Or you should come up with your own original songs, like Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" or N*Sync's "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays." You might not like the artists, but those songs are pretty catchy and have become a part of the Christmas tradition for me.

I wish the people who butcher those songs could be properly prosecuted and sent away for a long, long time.

There's a bunch of commercials on the radio for Garmin GPS units that slice and dice "Hark how the bells" one of my favorite X-Mas songs. As someone who studied advertising I can understand the thinking behind it, but making peoplehate your products for cruel and unusual torture of a good song makes me hope for them to be outsold by TomTom and Magellan.

Stop those terrible commercials!!!!!

Someone once thought it a good idea to make a song combining Wizzard's "I wish it would be Christmas every day" and Mike Batt's "Wombling Merry Christmas".

It wasn't.

Take the Trans Siberian Orchestra with them, too. I've had enough of them. Oh, and Aretha's new Christmas CD? Uggh!! Pure torture. Couldn't even tell what songs she was singing.

I like some of the alternate takes on songs. I mean, if you've heard one somber, drippy take on "My Lonely Christmas," you've heard 'em all. If somebody has another take, let's hear it.

The classic Christmas songs by their classic artists are always the best. I think the only new addition to the Christmas music repertoire in the past 20 years that has worked is Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas is You. So really no remkaes of these songs are ever good.
