Just thought I'd leave this here for you guys to see. As always, since I'm a novice writer I'd love to know what you think of my writing and opinions on the movies.

Well done. I think that was a pretty even handed review but I personally I think Final Frontier is vastly underappreciated. Sure it has some glaring problems as every ST film, save for VI, does. Sure the effects are bad but only because we have been spoiled rotten by the other films. The effects in Final Frontier are still way ahead of anything in TOS or other good sci-fi like Babylon 5.

Those are the things FF doesn't do so well, but what it does well...it does really well. Sybok's attempt at converting or "healing" the trinity is such a great Trek moment, ending on that perfect "I need my pain!" speech by Kirk.

The camping scenes were flawless, in my opinion.

"No, it isn't."

Finally...and most profoundly;
"What does God need with a starship?"
"..Bring the ship...closer..."
"I said...what does God need with a starship?"

Any film that contains such memorable and endearing moments cannot possibly be that bad. I think I am turning into something of a champion for FF, not because it's my favorite, but because no one else seems to bother to defend it.

Pretty good review. One nit: I don't think Shatner's involvement in the screenplay was due to the WGA strike. After all, he originated the story. The strike did apparently impact the film's preproduction, probably meaning that rewrites were not possible.

Shatner, Bennett and Loughery had cracked the story and Bennett / Loughery were working on the first draft when the WGA went on strike. Once the strike was over, Bennett and Loughery went back to work, but production began about two months after the strike ended, so the script was absolutely rushed. Shatner originated the story but he never actually worked on the script.

It is worth remembering we Trek fans are often quite a smart literate lot and therefore critical reviews do have an impact on us, fact is with the possible occasional exception of TWOK the Trek films all generally get little critical praise.

The reality is, no, none of the Trek films are the Godfather, and as of yet none are Empire Strokes Back either (though they could be one day).

But we all like what we like, so if you love TFF you shouldn't feel bad at all - I will happily sit and watch all twelve trek films, in a sitting if I ever had the time!
