I think my universal translator is broken, but....

STO doesn't go Free to play (F2P) until January 17th. You won't be able to just log in and play until that time.

Secondly, to my knowledge Star Trek online doesn't have a mac client, unless your running BootCamp, in which case the fact your on an iMac should be moot (apart from an older, less powerful graphics card, which may hamper performance).

Cryptic has in the past said that they do eventually plan to port STO to OS X, but that hasn't happened yet. There is a decent chance it will eventually however, since City of Heroes is available for the Mac. In the meantime, there is an unofficial Wineskin wrapper, but it is, as I said, unofficial and thus unsupported by Cryptic. It can be found here:

That Wine wrapper is pretty good, I've been using it for over a year now. It has a few eccentricities that you won't find in the Windows native version, particularly with the Season 4 and 5 updates, which introduced all kinds of unfortunate Wine-only crash issues related to resolution swaps and whatnot.

Still, if you're willing to put up with a few extra hassles it's well worth checking out. Just don't expect it to perform as well as it would under a Boot Camp setup. Your Mileage May Vary, of course.
