STO: no product key

I've just downloaded the STO client, but it seems like I need an activation/product key. Do I get this once I've purchased a subscription, or do I also have to pay for the client as a digital download/physical dvd? Just that I thought this was like most MMO's - download the client free, but purchase a subscription to play... I would have asked this in the STO forums, but I don't have permission to post, despite having made an account...

You need a product key, you get this when you buy the game, most if not all give the first 30 days free, after that you need a subscription, oh and you need to have some sort of payment method entered into your account to activate everything, you don't get charged but some valid form of payment must be entered to get at that free 30 days.

Ah, so the client I downloaded isn't useable - you actually have to buy the game on a disc or as a digital download... bummer - I hope there's a free trial sometime soon, where I don't have to buy the game, as well as the subscription.

Good thing you couldn't. If you did, I'm sure you'd be instantly banned from there. I would think they don't take kindly to folks talking about pirated copies of the game on the official forum! Or here, for that matter...

They have the client up for free download. It's not necessarily pirated.

Get a buddy key, 5 day free trial. If you do buy the digital thing, you dont have to redownload it.

Really? I just assumed he must have obtained it illegally because them offering it for free and without a key just didn't make any sense.

They need to offer some sort of download for buddy keys, though. Could've locked it behind an account wall, but I guess they decided not to. (Guild Wars is the same way.)

I think that you can subscribe to the game on their website and get a key. Of course doing it this way you don't get the "free" 30 days.

After receiving this email and downloading the client, I'm frustrated, Free 2 play , Ya if you pay for the game , nowhere does it say this before downloading the client for 1 hours.
