STNG still rocking the ratings

I have them all on DVD but it's still a pleasure to watch them 'live' for some reason.

The thing that pisses me off about the DVD sets is the lack of 'Next time on Staaaaaaaaaar Trek: The Next Generation' promos'.

As crazy as this might sound, that was a highlight of watching the series in first run. The episodes were awesome, but I'd always be like "Can't wait till we see what the next one is" and you have Don LaFontaine doing the "Next Time on Staaarrrrrrrr Trek: The Next Generation" and I just got psyched up. I really wish those were included on the DVD sets.

Good is good and TNG is GOOD. And boy do we need it's optimism, maturity and sense of intellectualism these days!

Those things are called bumpers

The article is a bit misleading as they were still around strongly in the 1980s, just not on network tv. Look at old commercials online and you'll see many independent stations used bumpers for their movies and cartoons (as the article notes). Syndicated shows used them too. DS9, Hercules, Xena I vividly remember. DS9 used, what was that, a 4 note segment of their fanfare? I remember the Voyager bumper card though not the music to go with it.

I liked them too. Ernie Anderson did them for the first few years, I believe. I loved the announcement at the start of the premiere episode: "Lt. Commander, an androiiiiiid! The telepathic Troiiiii!"

When TNG first hit VHS on Columbia House, the first couple of tapes had the commercial bumpers. But smoe fans complained to Gene Roddenberry and he wrote to Columbia House and told them to make sure not to include them. I read this memo in David Alexander's Roddenberry biography.

It occurred to me, if you count the syndication airings, the cable airings (Sci-Fi-700,000, BBC prob 100,000s) STNG probably is watched by 1.5-2 million people a WEEK after 23 years!!

RAMA

That's better than a lot of first-run shows, really. I think it's safe to say that TNG has becomes as classic and beloved as TOS was in the 80s.
