STNG commercials, pre-Farpoint!

If you notice, every 30 second spot has at least one shot of Star Trek II in it as filler. Usually it was either the genesis project demo, or the battle between the Enterprise and Reliant.

And, on my packaging of TVH at least (may have been after TNG premiered), I have a different promo than the one you linked. I have one that has clips from "Where No One Has Gone Before" and maybe other episodes (been forever since I've seen TVH on VHS, but i do remember Picard stepping out of the turbolift into space.

Thank you so much for those links RAMA; those were great to watch!

I especially dig the intense 80s music on the 30s spots! :)

Man, that trailer from the STIV VHS brings back some memories. I must've seen that one 100 times over the years.

I was actually in search of promos that started early in summer that had the huge metal cutout of STNG on it...they were really high tech and fast paced. I cannotseem to find them on youtube!

Neat! I remember seeing that first promo on a rental VHS of Star Trek IV, the first time I ever saw that movie.

I find it amusing that the announcer was saying "Staaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrr Trek! TheNextGeneration!" right from the beginning.

Thanks RAMA. I remember seeing those (except for the 30 second count downs) back in the day.

Thanks--these are awesome. Did the music on the 30-second TNG promos remind anyone else of Duran Duran?

The music on those 30 second spots is freakin' amazing. I need that in my life.

I remember the 30-second countdown spots. Some of my friends in subsequent years didn't even believe they existed! :)

I love the use of recycled f/x footage from the films in those spots. Seeing Kirk's Enterprise stuck in the wormhole from Star Trek: The Motion Picture is amusing, and Vejur "swallowing" a Klingon battlecruiser is nice. I noted from Star Trek II Spock's torpedo burial, the Genesis promo tape (the torpedo detonation, the skimming of the lifeless surface, and the creeping Genesis wave as it propagates across the planet), and the phaser attack on the Reliant. Star Trek III appears to be represented only by the opening of the Spacedock doors, and Star Trek IV appears not at all.

Watching them again I wonder what they were thinking, taking Marina Sirtis out of the skant and putting her in that awful jumpsuit.

I remember these well! I was 17 when TNG came out and couldn't wait for it to air. Thanks for the nostalgia.

I loved those and even without watching them now, I remember how Ernie Anderson (the announcer) would stretch out some words, as was his shtick. "Sarrrrr Trek" and, my favorite, "Lt. Commander Data, an androoooooid. The telepathic Troiiiiii." The promo used in the VHS tape for TVH used a different announcer, so it lost a little something. But for the intro to the pilot that night, it was all Ernie.

Wow, those are great. I still can't believe as big of a Trek fan as I was, I didn't even know about the show until the day before the premere of Encounter at Farpoint. I read it in my college newspaper and my first though was WTF is this?

Wait! Did I hear right?
Did the guy really say '...and her brilliant son Wesley'?

I've never seen these before. (I was bit too young to see them from TV but I usually hang out in YouTube watching stuff like this) Kinda sweet commercials, actually. I love it how TV channels - especially American - do commercials like that. If it would've been Finnish commercial, they probably would've just said something like 'new star trek on then and then'.

'Staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar Trek'! Very...'grandiloquent' in a good way. These were really cool!

Hey, he was smarter than the entire crew...multiple times. Even smarter than the android with the computer brain. How else do you explain him saving the ship all the time and making the rest of the crew look like Pakleds?

We all forget what a big deal it was when TNG came on. I haven't forgotten, even though it was more than 23 years ago. My first impression when I was watching the first ep was how odd it was for the captain to have a British accent -- and be bald, of course! It was an exciting time for Star Trek, what with the fourth movie still fresh in folks' minds. Thanks, Rama!

Alas, I still haven't found the commercial with the big blue metal logo flying overhead with sound effects that sounded like a jet airplane whine. It premiered 6-12 months before the show. I remember them showing it during Yankee baseball games on WPIX.

TNG promo on STIV original VHS

Wow what nostalgia!

Before the series...a promo used in STIV packaging. Well-produced!
from the VHS home media released on September 30, 1987 according to Wikipedia.

Hmm. "Encounter at Farpoint" Episode 1x01
First aired: 28 September 1987

So the promo wasn't seen until after the pilot aired?
Thanks RAMA I've not seen this before.

The pilot aired on Sept 28th in many areas, but wasn't supposed to be released till Oct 3rd. I guess it was "synergistic" publicity for the series. I RECALL seeing it before Farpoint, but whether it was a few days before or not, I don't recall. I DO remember thinking it LOOKED better than the ST movies!
