STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening [U.S. box office]

Let's ask for the Japanese friends to help Star Trek Into Darkness to achieve grossing $500 million worldwide. Yes, we can!

I would but my Japanese "friend" (wife) lives with me here. :rommie:

Ok, but, I think, she has japanese friends there.:techman:

Hey now, that's pure speculation. She could have become an outcast when she married Belz. Being ostracized for dishonoring her family may mean she has few friends left in Japan. Belz can't be held responsible for STID's box office total over there. ;)

From last week on there are 5 countries that have/will release STID. Im guessing $2-3 million from 4 of those countries, and $10-12 million from Japan. We're looking at $465 million tops. Still a good total.

RAMA

Benedict Cumberbatch last night concluded a massively successful Into Darkness PR campaign in Japan.

Tickets for the 3 screenings of the film in Tokyo sold out in 3 minutes. More than 100 media outlets, including 30 from television, covered his press conference.

At last night's event he was presented with a plaque containing pictures of all his magazine covers with the title, 'the cover face of 2013 in Japan.' There's also a photo of him standing in front of a giant poster of John Harrison... wearing a crown. (Uh, Harrison, not Cumberbatch!)

Japan's looking very promising! Here are some pictures: http://cumberbatchweb.tumblr.com/post/55706344822/hope72-stid-event-in-tokio-part-2-the-nice

Very impressive! :)

Cumberbatch has a nice following in Japan it would seem because I remember he was 'mobbed' at the airport in Dec 2012 when he went to Japan to show the 9 minutes.

He was also on Top Gear and both he and Jeremy Clarkson had only nice things to say about Star Trek... and that is the most watched program in the world :)

I do feel STID may just have that final big push in it, dragging itself up to $470m. As I stated up thread, that really is a decent total, a far stronger finish than I speculated on a few weeks ago.

STID 448,700 Total worldwide so far.

TOTAL for Star Trek 2009: Worldwide: $385,680,446

I would think this is a clear success, no?

There will be another boost this weekend. If it is 100 freaking million over the last movie's gross... how can "disappointment" even be uttered?

Well, you see...

If you only count only the money made by the 2d showings, adjust for inflation, and divide by 7 for no apparent reason, how can you possibly say it's a success?!

It's a solid success, but it's not going to make $100 million more than the last one, more like $75 million more by the end of its run. That's decent and certainly enough for another sequel to be made, but not quite the box office jump the studio would have wanted given the budget increase, a much bigger international push, and the 3D release. The international release was a success, posting a substantial gain over the last film, while the domestic gross was fine, but the drop there meant that the worldwide gross isn't quite as triumphant as it might have been.

I think for some, no matter how much it pulls in, it will not be a success. In face of the massive flops that have been occurring in the last few weeks, the argument is ridiculous. It has been a success and I am glad to see it.

Absolutely. Pacific Rim is a bigger flop than Into Darkness, and don't get me started on R.I.P.D. :D

This summer's sequels have almost all been hits to one degree or another, while the efforts to launch new big budget franchises have mostly failed, some spectacularly so.

Good God, don't make me spout diet mountain dew through my nose like that again!! :) :)
