STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening [U.S. box office]

I feel as though I've done my part. I've seen the movie three times. I may consider going again. Of course, I live in Australia, so I often feel my voice is not counted when it comes to Star Trek. I was probably one of the twenty people who watched Enterprise here, when they shoved it in the 12am death slot on TV. A lot of Aussie fans just resorted to pirating the episodes, because they relegated all the shows to the graveyard shift on TV, the time zone where you get adult chat lines advertised.

I'm not sure how much of the international gross makes it to the studio, either.

It's made $13,838,405 here. According to Box office Mojo.

It doesn't help that our dollar has dropped so sharply! Bit sad that The Hangover overtook Star Trek's gross here in half the time.

Ah, I remember the late nights watching Star Trek. DS9 and Voyager were on at 11pm, years behind the US. Enterprise's pilot aired on a Saturday night and was artificially split into two parts, then was buried at midnight.

All I remember is the endless phone sex ads and falling asleep in front of Enterprise only to be woken up by the theme music at the end. And stupid me thought it was boring! It was a whole different show when I took my viewing into my own hands and fuck you'd the tv stations.

And yeah I have since bought it on dvd, three times in fact as gifts.

That was the last show I tried to watch on commercial television.

Thank God for DVD (and Blu ray). I barely ever watch shows, on television, anymore. It's almost always DVD. I don't miss having to stay up til the wee hours, falling asleep during VOY, DS9, or ENT. We didn't get Endgame til 2005 here, four years after the US.

I now have all Star Trek series and movies on DVD to watch at my leisure. That's one thing about them making a new Trek series, it would be absolutely buried in the schedules here. I'd have to wait for the DVD.

Even shows like Lost, Buffy, and Angel, were hard to watch here, as they were buried in the post-10.30 pm slot

But that's because TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT were presold to international home video markets in order for Paramount/Viacom to be able to afford to make each series. There was a "12-month video holdback" on commercial airings on free-to-air TV.

"Endgame" was available for rent in Australian video stores not that long after the official US airing, and the two-eps-per-package sell-through VHS tapes for Pal Region 4 were sold in places like Myer, Big W and the specialist book stores. In some cases the episodes were out in the shops before my US penpals could post me a compilation off-air tape.

True. They were on video. However, I was still a teen during most of Voyager's run, so I didn't have any money to buy the tapes  Than god for having DVDs, and a disposable income :techman::

It was an EPIC day when Endgame was released in the video store. I remember reserving it to borrow before it came in even though there was zero rush on it

The Friday number for Star Trek appears to be around 3.2m so hopefully we are going to get around $11m this weekend. ST09 did $12.6m.

Man of Steel takes away IMAX Next weekend so the drop will be very big for Trek.

In china trek is at $34m as of Wednesday. South Korea will see a big drop because apparently the biggest movie of all time in SK was released this week (a local movie).

$199.5 million is close enough :techman:

have there been recent statements from the studio about the film's box office performance? Are they expressing disappointment, satisfaction,?

They're fine.

They're projecting $490 million. I think they're very happy.

You mean all this fatalistic stuff upthread was ... fatalistic ?

It doesn't really matter who is at fault at this point, because Star Trek may be dead as a franchise.

It's sad how IM3 effortlessly got to 1 billion, when we'll be happy if STID limps to 500 mil. :( Or even 400.

RIP Star Trek

It is a bad start, there is no way to spin these numbers positive. I seriously believe that $200m is in doubt at the moment because of the competition for the rest of May.

A quick Google only turns up media release reactions to opening weekends around the world. Satisfied is the common comment. Nothing official since.

Last time (2009), I recall a different media release popping up when Paramount/CBS commented upon the huge spike in sales for ST DVDs due to the first Bad Robot film - not just TOS, but all ST DVDs.

Well it looks like STID is on course to return a proft from the cinema alone. Releastically it has 1 week left in the markets that have MoS opening next week. But STID into Darkness hasn't been released everywhere yet (and isn't set to continue to open in new markets through into August?)

So may US$490m isn't out of the question

DVD and BluRay should add quite well to the total in addition to whatever they get from rental and television.

:guffaw:I love reading old comments sometimes. STID will not only reach but easily smash $200m. As for Paramount's $490m I still think thats a little on the over optimistic side but including DVD/Blu Ray on top of the Box Office I can see the gross being around $550-600 million.

I expect the first DVD release might be huge. Remember "Nemesis", where so many US fans (and members of the general public) seemingly chose "Maid in Manhattan" on opening weekend, and fans spent months boasting online how they'd blackbanned "Nemesis"... but when the DVD came out, sales were way beyond expectations. Presumably all those people who'd denied themselves a cinema experience wanted to check it out after all, and as soon as they could.

STiD may do the same domestically.

I posted that :rommie: It was a possibility at the time but I am happy to be wrong of course :)

OTOH I am sad that we didn't increase on ST09 and get to $300m!

I regret missing the IMAX version, but I will probably still see it a second time before closing, maybe in 2D. I like the standard 3D but it is a little blurry. Superman opened at the local IMAX today.
