STID Marketing Success

Funny thing is that JJ says that he blames the poor marketing and advertisement for the underperformance of ST09 in overseas.
Did he? You wouldn't have a link to that, would you?

The last movie definitely did worse overseas than Hollywood action flicks are expected to do, at least proportionately, where the expectation is, more than half of revenues coming from overseas, but that could have been anything - maybe the content of the movie (too much backstory on characters the foreign audience is less familiar with) rather an the marketing.

The new poster is very Batman-esque, which may not please Trekkies, but it's familiar and will probably please foreign viewers who are looking for a fun outing at the movies but may not care about Star Trek in particular.

Marketing's not going to tell me anything I don't know already. It's a trek film with spaceships and a villain. Maybe two. The rest is just hype and piffle. :)

I believe the 'delay' in starting marketing this one was because they wanted the bigger competition brands to show their hands first. And thank god the Disney/Lucas news broke when it did. If that news were still forthcoming, had not broken till now or later, then it could have been trumping Star Treks thunder.

If you look at how previous Trek movies have performed, domestic versus overseas, you see that Trek has historically made more money in the US market than overseas. I don't have the figures right in front of me at this moment, but it averaged out to something in the neighborhood of 65% domestic/35% international over all previous movies for which international figures were available. There's some fluctuation in the split from movie to movie, but (with the exception of TUC) it's pretty small - just a few points either way.

The more typical big-budget actioners like G.I Joe, the Terminators and Rambos and Transformers and X-Men/Avengers-type stuff have always performed better overseas than Trek—more like the inverse of the split for Trek—and I see no reason to believe that they won't continue to do so. International markets just like those movies more than they like Trek; no matter how much you spend promoting Trek overseas, it's not going to sell as well. It's not so much a marketing failure as just the way it is.

EDIT:

Trek film grosses - domestic vs. international

*** .. Domestic ................+ Foreign ...................= Total
TUC . $74,888,996 (77.3%) . $22,000,000 (22.7%) . $96,888,996
GEN . $75,671,125 (64.1%) . $42,400,000 (35.9%) $118,071,125
FC .... $92,027,888 (63.0%) . $54,000,000 (37.0%) $146,027,888
INS .... $70,187,658 (62.3%) . $42,400,000 (37.7%) $112,587,658
NEM ... $43,254,409 (64.3%) . $24,058,417 (35.7%) . $67,312,826
ST ... $257,730,019 (66.8%) $127,950,427 (33.2%) $385,680,446

Numbers from Box Office Mojo

Well, if you gotta be heavy on Box Office on one side, much better to be heavy on the Domestic side, then the Foreign side, since Domestic gets them a bigger cut. Although the percentages stayed relatively the same, the numbers did increase, so, that's a good sign, IMHO, that the numbers increased equally on both Foreign and Domestic.

So he did. My friend told me Zimmer did. My apologies. Why pay rights to a musical score just for a trailer? I wonder now if it will be used in the movie?

Eh not the first timethis year we saw this. Resident Evil Retribution used tracks from the TWOK Legacy soundtrack

Music from other movies is used in trailers all the time. Hell, back in the 90s the music from Aliens was used in many trailers, even though James Horner didn't do the music for any of those movies.

I don't think anyone could reasonably assess "marketing success" based on responses on a Star Trek site. A bit of interest from the film's built-in audience proves nothing - what matters is marketing to those who aren't in the Trek "loop". For the vast majority of those people, the film is not remotely ontheir radar, and won't be for some time.

Man Of Steel, World War Z and Iron Man 3 all have trailers,

Didn't even know there is a trailer out for Superman... who thought it's a good idea to use music from LotR for that? That trailer is bad.

Hans Zimmer is composing the music for MoS. He composed the music for the LOTR movies so it's his score to do what he wants with.

As has been pointed out, Howard Shore wrote the music for LotR and, no, it's not really his (Zimmer's) to do with what he wants even if he had written it.

Using the music that begins right after Gandalf starts his own trek into darkness sets a pretty depressing mood, I think; not that general audiences would care, but genre fans know what that particular piece of music was written and intended for.

Logical assumption would lead us to believe the overseas marketing crew for Joe did a better job promoting the film than the Star Trek crew.

I can only speak for Germany. But here there wasn´t really anything you could call "marketing" for XI. There was the "under construction" trailer, a poster a month prior to the german permiere, and I think I saw the TV trailer about three times. And that was all. There were are few news articles after the fact. But really no marketing hype of any kind. But there never was any heavy marketing for a Star Trek movie to begin with. I think not even Generations (which performed pretty good I think) had any major marketing.
