Funny thing is that JJ says that he blames the poor marketing and advertisement for the underperformance of ST09 in overseas.
Did he? You wouldn't have a link to that, would you?
The last movie definitely did worse overseas than Hollywood action flicks are expected to do, at least proportionately, where the expectation is, more than half of revenues coming from overseas, but that could have been anything - maybe the content of the movie (too much backstory on characters the foreign audience is less familiar with) rather an the marketing.
If you look at how previous Trek movies have performed, domestic versus overseas, you see that Trek has historically made more money in the US market than overseas. I don't have the figures right in front of me at this moment, but it averaged out to something in the neighborhood of 65% domestic/35% international over all previous movies for which international figures were available. There's some fluctuation in the split from movie to movie, but (with the exception of TUC) it's pretty small - just a few points either way.
The more typical big-budget actioners like G.I Joe, the Terminators and Rambos and Transformers and X-Men/Avengers-type stuff have
always performed better overseas than Trek—more like the
inverse of the split for Trek—and I see no reason to believe that they won't continue to do so. International markets just like those movies more than they like Trek;
no matter how much you spend promoting Trek overseas, it's not going to sell as well. It's not so much a marketing failure as just the way it is.
