I only ever slapped mine two times when she was a child. Once when she ran out onto the road and once when she wrote on the furniture with an indelible felt tip pen. They were only brief slaps but I felt terrible. When she was about 15 she kicked me on the shin deliberately to see what would happen. I slapped her face so she decided not to do it again. For my part it was pure reaction because it was bloody sore.

I don't think you have anything to apologize for.

As for this teacher--I concur with those people who think this is wrong, but not a terribly big deal. Just tell the teacher to stop.

Children aren't made of porcelain. They're a lot harder to break than some people seem to think. And there are lots of cases of actual child abuse out there that need our attention.

We really needed a poll to determine that teachers taping kid's mouths shut was not okay?

I only started a poll because of the results in the newspaper poll (WAToday) in which nearly 50% of readers have voted that it is an appropriate form of punishment.

I am glad to see that far fewer people here think it is appropriate.

As far as spanking goes - I only approve of it if the child is too young to reason with and has done something dangerous. My most common form of punishment was standing a child in a corner.

Other.

Not ok for kids but there is a tonne of adults that need their mouths sowed shut.

I have a feeling those numbers reflect people just being pro-disciplinarian without thinking things through, and that if they saw a teacher taping over a child's mouth in person they'd change their tune real quick. And they certainly wouldn't want that to happen to their children.

Plus, a lot of people deliberately screw with the poll results just for fun, and there's probably some of that going on too.

Besides which, this is a Star Trek board mostly full of godless hippie liberal socialists who think children should be given free rein to do as they please and are responsible for the decline in respect amongst today's youth and ultimately for the downfall of society. It's obvious which way we're going to vote. ;)

I voted not appropriate for any age. It seems like a pretty ineffective punishment. If you want to get all ironical, let them talk as much as they want, but give everyone else headphones so they can't be heard.

When I read what 1001001 said, I flashed back to Johnny Dangerously for some reason:

"Don't tape my mouth shut. Someone taped my mouth shut once....once."

That would be my reaction if I caught someone taping my kid's mouth shut, most likely.

Not all of us fit that stereotype. Some of us are pagan hippie liberal socialists.

Thanks for trying to cheer me up. :)

Hey, I'm more of a traditional-leaning conservative capitalist... but even I find the whole sticky-taping of kids' mouths to be a tad bit on the unethical side. I think that we can afford to cross party lines here and agree unilaterally that there are probably better ways to handle misbehaving children than the duck tape method.
