Steven Spielberg's Fall Skies first trailer

Sometime in the last day or two they released the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's new (post) alien invasion series, Falling Skies. I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but it looks pretty damn good to me. I know it was only a quick flash, but from what we could see, their alien design looks pretty cool.
I can't wait for this! You can't go wrong with Spielberg and aliens.

Sure, I might be up for some mindless action and one-dimensional alien fighting this summer. Noah Wylie is sympathetic enough as a lead actor to carry his end of things.

Y'know, somehow, the thought "Noah Wylie should totally be fighting aliens" has never crossed my mind...

Ha ha...if any of you here are the guy who posted a comment on YouTube about the stars being "empty youth leads" then I apologize for making fun of you there.

But seriously, who considers a 39 year old actor a "youth lead?"

Well there's a tharpdevenport in this forum too, so maybe it's him. But normally I don't read YouTube comments because they have the worst excuse-for-human-being posters on the planet.

Yeah, it probably is.

That's why I apologized. Youtube isn't a place where normal rules apply. I can make fun of people there and not feel bad like I do over here!

As for the show...yeah...I probably wouldn't watch that. But I don't really like ANY of the zombie/virus/slaves-to-alien movies set in a Mad-Max world. So my dislike really doesn't mean much.

So V will end just in time for Falling Skies to start, which what with the human v. alien fighting looks like what V should have been from the get go.

Hopefully it turns out a lot better.

My thoughts exactly. V's first season was such a vapid, boring excuse for a series I was thrilled that the trailer's tagline was "Join the resistance." Brilliant. I'll be tuning in. Even if it's as vapid as V, it looks like it at least has some proper 'splosions.

Maybe our heroes will even ask(just ask, you don't even need to answer the question) why the aliens are invading Earth.

Something our heroes in V seem totally unable to ask.

It looks more interesting than V. It's funny how all the more promising genre efforts are popping up in channels not known for showcasing such works.

I await the inevitable budget cuts that result in "they can disguise themselves as human now!"

It's Speilberg, so I doubt it will be that one dimensional. One of the things that interests me is the fact that Moon Bloodgood's character is a shrink working with the children of the group. So it sounds like there's a chance it might get into some of the emotional and psychological impact of the invasion. Which could be really interesting IMO.

Ummm, did they not notice the gray haired general or whatever he is who they showed a whole bunch of times?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull disagrees...
:p

But I get your point in Spielberg's history, although his more recent history with aliens isn't as stellar as the first 10-15 years of his movie making career. War of the Worlds had some moments, but it got bogged down into melodrama with the family storyline running through it and some unrealistic reunion at the end of it.

This does look interesting and I get a lot of original V vibes from the resistance scenes that are shown. It also seems to be going more for a darker tone, I looked at some of the prequel webcomic on the tnt site for it and there was a page where the kids were being armed to defend themselves.

Although I agree with what one of the other posters said and that's I expect the special effects at some point to be 'scaled back' and we'll see either aliens in human form, aliens brainwashing humans to do their bidding, alien parasites controlling humans, or just straight-up human collaborators working on behalf of aliens.

War of the Worlds got bogged down by the story they wanted to tell? If it wasn't for the cops and robbers parts, Heat would be great.

Doesn't pretty much every movie tell the story 'they want to tell?' and the rest is just how we the audience respond to the story they put on the screen?

I don't see anything wrong with thinking War of the Worlds was bogged down by the whole family thing and not enough attention paid to it being an alien attack on Earth. Obviously it was the direction Spielberg wanted to go and a reinterpretation of material, but I didn't like it. It's like when someone talks about Pearl Harbor and says it was 'bogged down' by the love story in it. It was a major factor in the movie, but I went wanting to see Pearl Harbor, not a love story set in and around the events of Pearl Harbor.

Just like I went to watch War of the Worlds and not a story set in and around the events of War of the Worlds.

V at least attempted (ineptly) to make the aliens more than one-dimensional foes, and to throw some social commentary (maybe) into the mix. I don't see Fallen Skies being anything more than straightforward shoot-em-up. If it's well done, I'll watch, but ordinarily I'd want more than that from a show. Maybe it should be called Fallen Standards instead. :D

Maybe our heroes will even ask(just ask, you don't even need to answer the question) why the aliens are invading Earth.
Or maybe it's so obvious that the question doesn't need to be asked - they want to exterminate humanity and take over the planet! Sometime simplest is best...well, until we all get bored and antsy at such a simple premise and nothing but splosions every week...

It's Speilberg, so I doubt it will be that one dimensional.

I guess I don't associate Spielberg with deep-thinking drama.

Schindler's List is the only one of all the movies of his I've seen that I'd describe that way, and I don't recall many aliens making an appearance. :rommie:

Noah Wyle saying that history shows repeatedly that popular resistance can lead to an invader's withdrawal is far too reminiscent of Vietnam, and too painful for those who think of Iraq and Afghanistan.

As a shoutout from the writers, it's not nearly as attractive as "universal health care."

Voiceover and pictures by children are already suggestive of vastly more thought and feeling than V. Worth checking out, unless the political overtones are already repulsive, especially given Spielberg's reputation as a liberal (aka by some as "shallow") thinker.

The usual suspects already have the knives out, in defiance of what's in front of their face.
