Steven Soderbergh to direct The Man From U.N.C.L.E.?

^ Yeah, one reviewer said he was actually longing for a bit of Roland Emmerich-style melodrama and spectacle about half-way through...

^ you beat me to it but I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only one actually reading this thread.

Disappointing news, especially since the studio seemed to be only willing to spend $60m on a tentpole movie, set in the 1960s and crossing four continents. Interestingly enough, the report suggests that the likes of Matt Damon and Johnny Depp (first I'd heard of that) liked the script, it was just the timing that didn't work out.

Sadly, it seems that this particular incarnation of TMFU was particularly tailored to Soderbergh, so it looks like the project will go into turnaround and in all probability be re-written. Shame.

I have been reading the thread occasionally, but haven't posted anything previously because I know absolutely nothing about the original television series. My only real interest in this project came from Soderbergh's involvement.

I'm familiar with the original series, but I know nothing about Soderbergh, so I don't know if this is good or not. I hope if the movie is still a go then they keep it in the 60s. I like this new trend of keeping things in the era where they belong.

^ Probably. It's been linked to Tarantino, Matthew Vaughn (who, for a while, was mistakenly thought to be the son of Robert!) and others over the years; it just doesn't look like it's meant to be.

I was going to make a crack about Jason Statham as Napoleon Solo...

But y'know Robert Downey Jr *could* pull it off...
