Steven Page won’t rejoin Barenaked Ladies

Yeah---no reason is giving, just that he feels weird about the group not changing the name and still performing his songs.

Did you even READ the article?

And this is news, why? The band has been doing fine since he left. They've actually reinvented themselves and their sound which was getting tired when Steven Page was with the band. I actually like them better now that he's not with them. It allows them a chance to grow.

All the same, I miss Steve (then again, I haven't really brought an album from them since Gordon. But I still love the 'Ladies.)

Wait a minute... He's upset that they band didn't change their name and they still perform his songs?
This whole 'I want to go my own way' stuff happened because he was the guy that got busted with a large quantity of cocaine shortly after the band released a kids album which forced him out of the band. Why should the other guys have to go through a whole re-branding process and essentially start from scratch because he fucked up?

Bill Wyman didn't bitch that the Rolling Stones didn't change their name when he quit the band so why is the singer is somehow the end all/be all of the band. Styx and Journey both come to mind as having singer changes and yet they're still around and that damn Don't Stop Believin' song is hotter than ever.

Steven Page, Steve Perry, and Dennis DeYoung should start their own band called Sour Grapes.

Been a fan of BNL for 13+ years now.

Recently saw them on tour at the Ryman and I have to say, I'd been a little worried in that they wouldn't be as good without Steven Page, but the show rocked.

Being in Nashville, they showcased some twang when Ed called David Mayfield (from the bluegrass band Cadillac Sky) out of the audience and up on stage to play Desolation Boulevard’s Fox On the Run. It was epic.

Ed's really stepped up his game, and while they're still missing the "Ballad Singer" they had in Steven, they've still got it.

Also, intro-woman Ingrid Micahelson did not disappoint.

Here's a link to a review of the show I saw: http://www.section303.com/nashville-lives-barenaked-ladies-and-ingrid-michaelson-rock-the-ryman-4461

Exactly.

The group is better off without him.

I was a huge BNL fan through the 90s and into the mid 00s, but neither of the "BNL are Men" and "BNL are Me" albums did much for me...just no songs that were all that memorable, so I kind of quit paying attention to them. Then I heard about all of Steven Page's troubles and that he left the band and figured that was that. Glad to hear they are still rocking without him...have they released an album or anything since Page left?

If this guy didn't pull an Axl and make sure he owned the name he has nothing to complain about. If the guys are legally allowed to use it, then complaining about what is essentially their bread & butter seems rather petty.

The band peaked out over a decade ago and change is needed. He is being a dick, why would they change the name when he left.

Fuck him. He got what he deserved.

Lingering shame over Maroon? :p

I loved Maroon, myself. Their last really good album before their latest, IMO.

And from the looks of things, I think the split is\will be good for both parties. Page clearly wasn't comfortable in the band anymore (going back to well before the cocaine-thing, actually, probably since at least '04\'05), and there was definitely some creative tension in there. And while it's too bad we won't see the band together again in a permanent basis (I'm virtually certain they'll probably still do the occasional show together, sometime in the future), All in Good Time wound up being a great album, and it looks like Page One will be as well:

Edit: I can also understand why he's a bit miffed at the band keeping the BNL name. The band was founded by him and Robertson, after all, and without Page they probably wouldn't have made it as big as they did in the early 90s.

Yep, All In Good Time

Yep. It forced them to change things up, which is a good thing. I honestly was getting tired of their old lineup. They seemed to be putting out albums twice a year with loads of unremarkable material. I wished that they would take a break and just write one really good album by spending more time on them rather than cranking them out. They needed to be more choosy with their songs.

I bought 'Barenaked Ladies Are Me' and didn't bother with 'Are Men', and even then I went with the single CD version. I don't know anyone who bought 'Are Me' that went on to buy 'Are Men'. It's ironic. I know they were trying to sell more albums, but they were saturating their own fanbase. The best thing they had done in that period was the kids album. 7 8 9 rocks.

I was very disappointed with 'Are Me,' but I went ahead and got 'Are Men' anyway in hopes that it would be better. In my opinion, it was. There are several songs on it that I liked, whereas 'Are Me' just bored me. I listened to it several times and nothing grabbed me.

'All In Good Time' has taken a couple of listens, but I like it pretty well now...except 'Jerome.' I skip past that one every time now.

Cocaine is a Hell of a drug.

I could of sworn Ed asked Steven to join him and that Ed had already picked the name Barenaked Ladies...

Not certain, but I read that somewhere recently.
