I think it’s the 8th Doctor - does he not say that he wrote it before he even knew that Moff had devised the War Doctor?

Indeed, and the mock up cover art featured on the same page as the story even includes an image of Paul McGann.

I know, I saw the cover. But its still very vague in its description of how he looks like. Indeed, its implied the Restoration, whatever that is, well, restored a whole new regeneration cycle, meaning the Ninth was actually the first of a new cycle.

However, because I'm a Whovian, I guess, I could simply imagine it being Hurt regenerating after really exploding Gallifrey, with the TARDIS materializing around him. The Restoration only restoring the regenerations he normally should have had remaining. Fits fine, methinks.

THAT ALL BEING SAID... I love that even RTD figured it could've been McGann's Doctor who did the deed. I love Hurt, but I can't stop but wish it was McGann for Day of the Doctor instead, especially after this. Ah, well. Really wonderfully written piece anyway. And reminds me how much I miss RTD, actually. We were really spoiled to have such a genius as a showrunner.

Which actually is a change from what RTD said in the early days, that he always intended it to be Eccleston who fought in the Time War. Although some think he changed his mind on this by the fourth season given Rose's line about the Doctor being "born in fire" or whatever in Journey's End.

Honestly, and watching the show for the first time at about 2013, that was the thought that occured to me. That Eccleston's Doctor was the one who undid the Time Lords and the like. It made his "coward" line more potent, as a way of sacrificing himself for destroying Gallifrey. Ah, well.
