Los Angeles (E! Online) – Count Stephen King among those not swooning over Edward Cullen.

In what should have been a controversy-free interview with USA Weekend to promote his latest book, the horror master has slammed Twilight creator Stephenie Meyer's writing prowess...by flat-out saying she has none.

What started with an innocent question on the recent juggernaut success of fellow mainstream writers Meyer and J.K. Rowling quickly devolved into a full-scale denouncement of the former's skills.

"The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephanie Meyer can't write worth a darn," he said. "She's not very good."

Leave it to an author not to mince his words.

Possibly sensing the worldwide fallout from inflaming millions of Twilight loyalists, King went on to say that while Meyere's writing may bite the big one, her storytelling is compelling...at least to a certain, less experienced segment of the population.

"People are attracted by the stories, by the pace and in the case of Stephenie Meyer, it's very clear that she's writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It's very exciting and it's thrilling and it's not particularly threatening because they're not overtly sexual.

"A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that's a shorthand for all the feelings that they're not ready to deal with yet."

While King seemed to reserve his choicest words for Meyer, she wasn't the only best-selling author eviscerated by him. On the contrary, King declared Perry Mason author Erle Stanley Gardner "terrible," Dean Koontz "sometimes…just awful," and James Patterson "a terrible writer" who is nonetheless "very very successful."

You know, the opposite of what King now is with Meyer fans.

:rommie:

Hell hath no fury like a Twilight fangirl scorned.

I dare not even imagine what is being said about Mr. King on Twilight message boards right now!

Wow, that was incredibly professional of him.

He was asked his opinion and he gave it. It's not as if he completely ripped into her; he merely stated he didn't believe that she was a good writer but that she came up with a compelling story. There's nothing unprofessional about that in the slightest.

Exactly. If you don't want something, you dont ask for it. You also cant expect everything you want to turn out the way you want it to.

And what would you rather he of done? Lie? And if he did, is that anymore professional than the truth that was told in this case?

Well, this was completely Random. Doesn't he have other more pressing things to be worried about.

Like... ?

Oh I don't know, but just coming out now to criticize someone else's work. This author isn't competing against him (They're too different demographics) and if she was, than he'd have to criticize every other author or something. Just the timing of this seemed so weird and random.

^ Well, he was asked by the interviewer. It's not like he just went on a tirade out of nowhere.

When asked a question in the course of an interview, it's customary practice to answer it. It's not like he called a press conference to announce his opinion of the author in question.

Would have been pretty funny if he did, though.

"Ladies and gentlemen... it is my opinion that Stephanie Meyer is not a good writer. She has good ideas, though. Thank you." *walks off stage*

And that's a case of me not reading the entire article. :shifty:

Coming from someone who is essentially a Pulp factory, this is pretty funny. I liked King a lot in his heyday, but his ego has always eclipsed his talent.

Anyway, in honor of Meyer and King, I will now do that voodoo that I do so well and send this to SF&F. Wheee-ooooo.

It's hardly surprising he has a big ego though, he's sold 350 million books, had almost 40 stories turned into theatrical movies (not including the 8 or so currently in production) several of which are amongst the most critically acclaimed films of all time, and 25 stories adapted for TV.

Clearly he connects with the fiction buying and movie going public in a way that no other author could ever hope to, I think if anybody is qualified to comment on other horror authors who have hit the big screen, it's him.
